LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO
VARIABLES
Standard Form:
ax + by = c
2) 5y = 4x - 6
Answer: 4x - 5y = 6
a = 4, b = -5, c = 6
3) 3 + x = - 7y
Answer: x + 7y = -3
a = 1, b = 7, c = -3
Slope-Intercept Form:
y = mx + b
2y = -3x + 4
2 2
y = -3/2 x + 2
Example: Write the following linear
equations in slope-intercept form.
2) 5y = 4x - 6
Solution: 5y = 4x – 6
5y = 4x – 6
5 5
y = 4/5 x – 6/5
GRAPHING
LINEAR
EQUATIONS
a) Given the
Two Points
of the line
Example 1. Graph the equation
whose two points on the line are (1, 6)
and (-2, -5).
The slope is
11/3.
rise = 11
The graph
has an
increasing
trend of the
x
slope is
positive. run = 3
Example 2. Graph the equation
whose two points on the line are (4,-2)
and (-5, 2)
The slope
is -4/9. The
graph has
an
rise = 4
decreasing
x
trend of the
line since
run = -9
the slope is
negative.
b) Given the
x-intercept
and the y-
intercept
x-intercept – the point, (x, 0),
where the line crosses the x,
axis.
The slope
is -4/2. The
graph has
an
rise= 4
decreasing
x
trend of the
run = -2
line since
the slope is
negative.
Examples: Graph the following linear
equations using intercept method.
2) 3x - 4y = 12
Solution:
To find the x-intercept, let y = 0.
3x - 4y = 12
3x – 4(0) = 12
3x = 12
3 3
x = 4. The ordered pair is (4,0).
Examples: Graph the following linear
equations using intercept method.
2) 3x - 4y = 12
Solution:
To find the y-intercept, let x = 0.
3(0) - 4y = 12
-4y = 12
-4 -4 .
y = -3.
The ordered pair is (0,-3).
2) 3x - 4y = 12. The x-intercept is
(4,0) and the y-intercept is (0,-3).
The slope
is 3/4. The
graph has
an
increasing
x
trend of the
rise= 3
line since
run = 4
the slope is
positive.
c) Given the
slope and a
point on the
line.
To graph a line using this
method:
1. Plot the given point.
2. Generate additional points on
the line by starting at the given
point (x, y) and moving the rise
and run of the slope.
Example 1: Graph the linear equations
whose slope is 2 and the point on the line is
(-3, -2).
Given :
(-3, -2)
m = 2 or 2/1
rise = 2 and
run = 1
x
rise= 2
run = 1
Example 2: Graph the linear equations
whose slope is -3/4 and the point on the
line is (5, -2).
Given :
(5, -2)
m = -3/4
rise = 3 and
run = -4
x
rise= 3
run = -4
ANALYSIS

equations in two variables given
the slope and a point on the line?
2. If the slope of the line is
undefined, how does the graph
