 A notable politician in the Ilocos region

1. Identify the names of the streets of your hometown, who are these
people?
a. Don Mariano Avenue (From Don Mariano Marcos ) –

Google Maps Location Link:

- In terms of location, Don Mariano Avenue is the

passthrough avenue towards our subdivision (just a few
minute walk distance from our home) and is a pathway for
vehicles from Angono to Antipolo and vice versa via Medalva
Subdivision, Mahabang Parang or some other routes left
available. It has been rehabilitated and maintained because
of its high traffic demands and has been a familiar site to my
eyes since I was 3 years old.
- “Don Mariano” isn’t only used in this specific avenue for I
have encountered streets and avenues alike having the
same name, such as Don Mariano Avenue in Cainta, Rizal
(near STI Main Campus, Ortigas – Cainta) and other
locations within the Metro.
- In terms of the person behind the avenue name, Don
Mariano Marcos was the father of one of the most renowned
Philippine Presidents in our history, Former President
Ferdinand Marcos.
-
2. What have they done for the community? For the country?
a. As details on current sources are vague and not thoroughly
discussing his life and works, it could be said that Mariano Marcos
was a prominent character in early politics of our history.
b. Mariano Marcos alongside with his beloved Josefa Edralin-Marcos
gave birth and raised their son who later became one of the
presidents of our history which was known for his great plans for the
nation but on the other hand, the cruel regime of Martial law,
Ferdinand Marcos.

3. Using the criteria of a hero, assess whether they answer the criteria
of being a hero.
Based on Criteria 1.
- It could be noted that he has a strong foundation and has left
a good reputable legacy in politics, some of the positions he
held in government are the following:
1. Became representative of the second district of Ilocos
Norte
2. Chairman of the Legislature
3. Member of the public instruction of:
a. public works,
b. public estate
c. mines and natural resources
Based on Criterion 2
- This is the part where he might be of reconsideration to
being given the title as a hero, because two days after the
Commonwealth Government Elections, Julio Nalundasan
was hit in the head by a shot coming from a rifle which
caused his immediate death. Mariano Marcos, his son
Ferdinand, and his brother Pio were arrested after being
accused as the spearhead of this crime.
- Furthermore, the Marcos Regime of government has
become one of the darkest phases of Philippine History,
though it couldn’t be denied that his son has created projects
for the betterment ofour country, Ferdinand also signed the
Martial law that disrupted thousand, if not, millions of
ordinary Filipino lives.
Based on Criterion 3
- He has left his legacy as his name is written in street,
avenue, and major roadways around the nation. In addition
to this, his name was used as the titles for two major state
universities and different landmarks such as
a. Mariano Marcos State University in Batac, Ilocos
Norte
 In this university, a National Historical
Marker was placed for his honor
b. Mariano Marcos State University College of
Education in Laoag City
c. Marcos Town, a former part of Dingras, Ilocos
Norte (made possible by RA 3753)
Overall, in my perspective, though his participation and full-on contributions for
the progressive stance of our republic is undeniable, his efforts and works are not
sufficient to be even called to as a hero. The criteria also show that he isn’t
eligible for that title for the reason being for being allegedly one of those who
plotted the assassination of his fellow Filipino politician and is not a good image
and history for a hero to hold.
