Background of the study

It is important for students to get the proper amount of sleep to help them stay focused and

concentrated in school. Consistently getting quality sleep will improve your student's mental,

emotional, and physical performance. Sleep is essential for a person's health and success.

Sleep is a vital, often neglected, component of every person's overall health and well-being.

Sleep is important because it enables the body to repair and be fit and ready for another day.

Getting adequate rest may also help prevent excess weight gain, heart disease, and increased

illness duration (Fletcher, 2019).

This study aims to determine the impact of sleep insufficiency to the academic performance and

study habits of the students. This research will also try to investigate the relationship between the

students academic performance and study habits. Since, sleep is essential for the survival of

every human being, the researchers are certain that it may play a factor in the performance of a

person if it's standards are not met.

According to Jake Gamsky (2016), consistently getting quality sleep will improve your student's

mental, emotional, and physical performance. It improves their immune system, balances

hormones, boosts metabolism, and improves brain function. The main reason sleep is so

important for a student's success in school is because this is the time when their brain is

"cleaning" itself. During sleep, our body uses this time to remove all that waste and allows us to
repeat the learning processes day after day. It's like removing all the unneeded files from your

computer, so you have storage for more important files.

Students should get the proper amount of sleep at night to help stay focused, improve

concentration, and improve academic performance. Children and adolescents who do not get

enough sleep have a higher risk for many health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes,

poor mental health, and injuries. They are also more likely to have attention and behavior

problems, which can contribute to poor academic performance in school.

In a study about The Effects of Sleep on Academic Performance and Job Performance, the

researchers concluded that sleep loss was negatively correlated with academic performance.

They found that sleep-deprived students performed poorly on learning capacity skills such as

attention, memory, and problem-solving tasks, and that the lack of sleep therefore affected their

academic performance. Moreover, sleep loss resulted in daytime sleepiness that was also

correlated with poor academic performance (Chiang, et.al., 2014).

Inadequate sleep decreases general alertness and impairs attention, resulting in slowed cognitive

processing. Lack of adequate sleep also interferes with the function of brain structures critical to

cognitive processes. The most notably impacted structure is the prefrontal cortex, which executes

higher brain functions including language, working memory, logical reasoning, and creativity

( Meghan Zeek, et. al., 2014).

Study habits are the most important predictor of academic performance and global research has

revealed that study habits affect academic performance. Considering the importance of study

skills and habits of students, and the important role they play in the academic achievement of

students, and taking into account that study habits vary from person to person and from place to

place, and also as the results of related studies are different from each other, the present study

was designed and implemented. (Jafari H, et. al., 2019)

Insufficient sleep never had any good outcomes. It may disrupt the students overall health and

well-being, resulting to a disruption on his/her's academic performance and study habits in

school. Aside from investigating the impact sleep insufficiency plays on the academic

performance and study habits of students, the researchers also aim to educate and spread

awareness on this matter.

Figure 1. A flowchart showing the Conceptual Framework of the Study

The conceptual framework of the study figure 1 shows the schematic presentation of the research
process. The conceptual framework was developed to serve as a guide of the study.
As shown in the figure, the base frame shows the respondents are and where it is conducted. The
target respondents of this study are the Grade 12 students of EVRSHS who has experienced
sleep insufficiency. Above the participants and locale are the concepts that should be answered
throughout the study, which is to determine the impacts of sleep insufficiency on the academic
performance and study habits of the students.
The whole research process is again connected to the ultimate goal of the study which leads to
identifying the the impacts of sleep insufficiency on the said variables. In the middle part of the
chart you can see the relationship between the academic performance and study habits.
Statement of the Problem

Research Question:
1. What causes sleep insufficiency of the students?
2. How can sleep insufficiency affect the academic performance of the students in terms of:
 Written outputs
 Projects
3. How can sleep insufficiency affect the study habits of the students in terms of:
 Review time
 Place of review
 Technique in studying
4. Is there a relationship between the influence of sleep insufficiency to the academic
performance and study habits of the students?

Definition of Terms

The definition of terms below will serve as a reference and as a key point of the entire literature.

The terms are first defined operationally and then follows the conceptual definition. The terms

are the following:

 Sleep Insufficiency- Sleep insufficiency exists when sleep is insufficient to support
adequate alertness, performance, and health, either because of reduced total sleep time
(decreased quantity) or fragmentation of sleep by brief arousals (decreased quality).

In this study, Sleep Insufficiency, serves as the factor that affects the academic
performance and study habits of the students.

 Academic Performance - Academic performance means the knowledge and skills that
students have mastered in a subject or a course. It’s basically a measure of how well
students have performed in the various assessment items set for them based on some
educational criteria determined by professional educators.

In this study, academic performance is an independent variable that refers to one of the
factors on the students that can be influenced by sleep insufficiency.

 Study Habits - Study habits is how one studies. That is, the habits which students form
during their school years. The definition of study habits are the behaviors used when
preparing for tests or learning academic material.

In this study, Study Habits is an independent variable that refers to one of the factors on
the students that can be influenced by sleep insufficiency.

 Students - one who studies or examines in any manner; an attentive and systematic
observer; as, a student of human nature, or of physical nature.

In this study, the students will be the participants, whom they are the ones who the ones
who the study focuses into and they are also the ones who will provide the data that will
be used in formulating the findings and conclusions of the study.

Significance of the Study

The researchers believe that this study will be significant to the following:

To the Students. This will help them learn that it is important to have enough sleep. It will also
serve as a warning to students as they will know that vigilance has a big impact on their health as
well as on their studies. The purpose of this study is to spread awareness on this matter so that it
would help stop the problem, a problem that is mostly experienced by the young generation

To the Parents. The results of this study can help spread awareness among parents about the
impacts og sleep insufficiency playd on the academic performance and study habits of thier
children. This also encourages them on how they can help stop or prevent the problem in order to
secure the safety of the childrens overall health and well-being being.

To the Teachers. This study could help the teachers to understand the impact of sleep
insufficiency in the academic performance and study habits of their students and may serve as an
eye opener on how they will handle them.

Future Researcher. The results and findings of the study can help future researchers, who have
similar studies, in gaining more information about the impacts of sleep insufficiency on the
academic performance and study habits of the students. It can also help in improving their own
studies and testing the validity of their findings. These study can help as a cross- reference for
other researchers in the future.

Scope and Limitation

The topic of the study is about the impact of sleep insufficiency on the academic performance
and study habits of the students. The researchers will be gathering data about the influence of
sleep insufficiency on the academic performance of the students in terms of :written outputs and
projects, and its influence on the study habits in terms of: review time, place of review, and
technique in studying. The researchers will also investigate what causes sleep insufficiency on
the students, and on what relationship does the student's academic performance and study habits
have.

The time frame of the study will be between the months, March 2021 to June 2021. The venue
of the study will be in Eastern Visayas Regional Science High School, in the city of Catbalogan,
province of Samar. Since the study focuses on the impact of sleep insufficiency on the academic
performance and study habits of students, the participants of the study will be taken in EVRSHS.
The participants should be grade 12 students who experiences sleep insufficiency, and can be
male or female. The researchers will be aiming for 50 participants to provide the answers to the
questions on the study.

The research design of the study is quantitative Casual- Comparative Research, and the
researchers will be using Voluntary Response Sampling as a method of finding respondents for
the study. The researchers will be using survey questionnaires in gathering the data needed to
fulfill the set of objectives in the study. This study is limited only on investigating the impacts of
sleep insufficiency on the academic performance and study habits of the students.
