Lesson 16: Electric Current and Simple Circuits

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN BRIEF.

Q1) What is the role of voltmeter in a closed circuit?

Ans1)A voltmeter is used to measure the potential difference between the

two terminals of a circuit.

Q2) Write one difference between.

Ans2)

a) Open and Closed circuit

open closed
In an open circuit current does not In a closed-circuit current flow as the
flow as the switch is open or circuit switch is closed.
is broken.

b) Cell and Battery

cell Battery
Cell is a single unit that converts A battery is a collection of cells.
chemical energy into electrical
energy.

c) Temporary and Permanent magnet

Temporary Permanent
Temporary magnet is a magnet that Permanent magnet retains its
remains magnetized for only a small magnetic strength for a long period
time interval. of time.

Q3)Define electric current.

Ans3) The flow of electrical charges through a conductor, is termed as
electric current.

Q4) Mention components required to make electric circuit.

Ans4) The components required to make electric circuit are cell or battery,
bulb, switch or key, conducting wires, ammeter and voltmeter.

Q5) What is a miniature circuit breaker?

Ans5) Miniature circuit breaker is a switch that automatically trips down if

the current flowing through it exceeds the prescribed maximum limit.

Q6) What is an electric fuse? What is its function?

Ans6) An electric fuse is a safety device used for breaking the circuit during
overloading of current. When current passing through the wire exceeds the
maximum limit, it gets heated up. If the temperature of the fuse wire
increases its melting point, then it gets melts and quickly breaks the circuit.
This prevents damage to the appliance

Q7) Name some appliances in which electromagnets are used.

Ans7) Electromagnets are used to lift heavy iron articles, to separate
garbage from dump, in loudspeakers, telephones, electric fan, washing
machines, refrigerators, toys and electric bells.

Q8) How short –circuit occurs in electric fuse?

Ans8) Short circuit in the electric fuse wire occurs by the heat of the

current, melting the wire to break the circuit.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN DETAIL:

Q1) Give reasons for the following:

a) MCB is better than electric fuse.

MCB detects any abnormality in the current flow and automatically switches
off the electric circuit. In the case of MCB the faulty zone of electrical circuit
can be easily identified and it is very simple to resume the supply, whereas
an electric fuse needs to be replaced whenever it goes faulty.MCB is safer
to handle and reusable therefore less maintenance and replacement cost.

b) Tin-lead alloy is used to make fuse.

A fuse is made of Tin-lead alloy because it has low melting point( does not
produce fire and heat nearby terminals and cables)

Q2) Explain the factors on which heating effect of electric current depends.

Ans 2) The heating effect of electric current depends on the following

factors:-

Q3) Draw the basic circuit diagram by using-a cell, a bulb, connecting wires
and a switch.

Ans3)

Q4) What is an electromagnet and how is it made? Name the factors which
help in changing the strength of an electromagnet?

Ans 4)
Q5) Why is copper wire not used in filament of a bulb? What will happen if
we use a thick tungsten wire in an electric bulb?

Ans 5) Copper wire cannot be used to make the filament of an electric bulb
as copper wire has very low resistance. Therefore, the bulb will not glow if
current is passed.

If we use thick tungsten wire in an electric bulb, it will not function properly.
This is because the resistance of a thick wire is less than that of a thin wire.
The filament should be having a high resistance in order to glow, which will
definitely get reduced if we use a thicker wire.

Q6) What is the use of electromagnet in electric bell?

Ans6) In an electric bell , an electromagnet is fitted such that when the

switch was turned on, it created a magnetic field due to which a nearby
magnetic hammer would be attracted to it and strike it thereby creating the
sound of the bell. When the switch is turned off, the hammer goes back to
its original position due to springs fitted.

Q7) Why MCB or electric fuse are not used in a circuit containing electric
cells?

Ans7) Generally electric cells we use are of limited voltage ( e.g. 1.5V), so
there is no chance of any short circuit. that's why MCB and fuse wires are
not used in such a circuit.

Q8) Draw the diagram of an electric bell and explain its working.
Ans8)

Q9) Prove with the help of an activity that an electric current can deflect the
needle of a magnetic compass.
