COMPETITION RULES
Art. 1 – The institutions "Slovenski center za glasbeno vzgojo - Centro sloveno di educazione
musicale Emil Komel" and "Kulturni center Lojze Bratuž", with the patronage of the municipalities
of Gorizia (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia) are hosting the 1st "MUSICA GORITIENSIS"
International Competition for young violinists, cellists, pianists and singers of all nationalities. The
aim of the competition is to promote musical culture and to encourage young people to study
music and to create new bonds.
The Competition will be held in online mode and the results will be published in the official web
page of the competition from May, 29th to June 2nd, 2021.
The competition will take place from May 29th to June 2nd, 2021 at the theatre Kulturni center
Lojze Bratuž, viale XX settembre 85, Gorizia (Italy).
In case the continued restrictions due to the epidemiological emergency from Covid-19 does not
allow the competition in presence, the same will take place in online mode.
Art. 2 – The competition is divided into the following 4 sections: I Violin, II Cello, III Piano, IV Voice,
each in turn divided into categories according to the age of participants.
I) Violin
• Category “A” - born in 2012 and younger
• Category “B” - born in 2010 and 2011
• Category “C” - born from 2007 to 2009
• Category “D” - born from 2003 to 2006
• Category “E” - born from 1997 to 2002
II) Cello
• Category “A” - born in 2012 and younger
• Category “B” - born in 2010 and 2011
• Category “C” - born from 2007 to 2009
• Category “D” - born from 2003 to 2006
• Category “E” - born from 1997 to 2002
III) Piano
• Category “A” - born in 2012 and younger
• Category “B” - born in 2010 and 2011
• Category “C” - born from 2007 to 2009
• Category “D” - born from 2003 to 2006
• Category “E” - born from 1997 to 2002
IV) Voice
• Category “A” - born in 2004 and younger
• Category “B” - born in 2002 and 2003
• Category “C” - born in 2000 and 2001
• Category “D” - born from 1997 to 1999
• Category “E” - born from 1991 to 1996
Art. 3 - PROGRAMME
VIOLIN COMPETITION
• Category “A”, max. performance time: 8 min.
a) programme of the contestant’s choice
• Category “B”, max. performance time: 10 min.
a) one Etude of the candidate’s choice.
b) one piece for solo violin and piano of the contestant’s choice.
• Category “C”, max performance time: 20 min.
a) two Etudes by two different composers, of a level of difficulty appropriate for the age and
proficiency level of the student. The Jury will select one Etude for the contestant to perform.
b) one piece for solo violin or violin and piano or 1st movement or 2nd and 3rd movement of a
Violin Concerto of the contestant’s choice.
• Category “D”, performance time: n/a the Jury has the right to interrupt the performance.
The competition will be divided into two rounds:
1) Preliminary round:
a) two Etudes by two different composers chosen among: J. Dont op. 35, K. Kreutzer, F. Fiorillo,
P. Rode or others of similar level of difficulty. The Jury will select one Etude for the contestant to
perform.
b) 1st movement or 2nd and 3rd movements of a Violin Concerto of the contestant’s choice, from
the period up to and including Mozart.
2) Final round:
c) J. S. Bach (Violin Solo):
- Sarabanda and Double from the Partita no. 1 in B Minor, or
- Sarabanda and Gigue or Allemanda and Giga from the Partita no. 2 in D Minor, or
- Prelude and Loure from the Partita no. 3 in E major.
d) A violin solo or with piano accompaniment from the Romantic period onwards or the 1st or 2nd
and 3rd movements of a concert from L. van Beethoven onwards.
• Category “E”, performance time: n/a the Jury has the right to interrupt the performance.
The competition will be divided into two rounds:
1) Preliminary round:
a) two Etudes or Capricci by different composers chosen among: J. Dont op. 35, P. Gavinièes, N.
Paganini, H. Wieniawski (L'école moderne and op. 18) or Hindemit Übungen. Two Capricci by
Paganini are also admitted. The Jury will select one Etude or Capriccio for the contestant to
perform.
b) J. S. Bach (Violin Solo):
- Adagio and Fugue from the Sonata No. 1 in G Minor, or
- Grave and Fugue from the Sonata No. 2 in A Minor, or
- Adagio and Fugue from the Sonata No. 3 in C Major, or
- Ciaccona from the Partita no. 2 in D Minor.
c) 1st movement with Cadenza or 2nd and 3rd movement (violin with piano accompaniment) of
one of the following Concertos:
- W.A. Mozart: in G Major 216
- W.A. Mozart: in D Major KV 218
- W.A. Mozart: in A Major KV 219
- W.A. Mozart: in B flat Major KV 207
- W.A. Mozart: in D Major KV 211
2) Final round:
d) 1st movement with Cadenza or 2nd and 3rd movement (violin with piano accompaniment) of a
Concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven or later composers.
e) Virtuosic piece for violin solo or violin with piano accompaniment chosen by the contestant.
N.B.: The Concertos should be performed from memory.
CELLO COMPETITION
• Category “A”, max. performance time: 8 min.
a) programme of the contestant’s choice
• Category “B”, max performance time: 12 min.
a) one Etude of the contestant’s choice
b) two contrasting pieces for cello with piano accompaniment of the contestant’s choice.
• Category “C”, max. performance time: 15 min.
a) one Etude by the following composers: D. Popper, J. L. Duport, F. Dotzauer, J. Merk, A.
Franchomme or others of similar level of difficulty
b) One movement from a Concerto and one piece or two contrasting pieces for cello with piano
accompaniment of the contestant’s choice.
• Category “D”, performance time: n/a the Jury has the right to interrupt the performance. The
competition will be divided into two rounds:
1) Preliminary round:
a) Two Etudes or Capricci by the following composers: F. Dotzauer, D. Popper op. 73, F.
Grützmacher op. 38, C. A. Piatti, A. F. Servais op. 11 or others of similar level of difficulty. The
Jury will select one Etude for the contestant to perform.
b) One movement from a Concerto of the contestant’s choice.
2) Final round:
c) A Prelude or two contrasting Movements from a Suite by J. S. Bach.
d) A virtuosic piece with piano accompaniment.
• Category “E”, performance time: n/a the Jury has the right to interrupt the performance. The
competition will be divided into two rounds:
1) Preliminary round:
a) Prelude to Cello Suite No. 4, 5, or 6 by J. S. Bach
b) Two Etudes or Capricci by the following composers: F. Dotzauer, D. Popper op. 73, F.
Grützmacher op. 38, C. A. Piatti, A. F. Servais op. 11. The Jury will select one Etude for the
contestant to perform.
c) First Movement of a Sonata from the period of L. van Beethoven onwards.
2) Final round:
d) 1st Movement or 2nd and 3rd movement of a Concerto (from Haydn onwards), or a Concertante
piece such as Tchaikovsky’s Rococo variations (for cello with piano accompaniment). Two
movements of Elgar’s Concertos are also admitted.
e) A virtuosic piece with piano accompaniment.
N.B.: The Concertos should be performed from memory.
PIANO COMPETITION
• Category “A”, max. performance time: 6 min.
a) programme of the contestant’s choice
• Category “B”, max performance time: 12 min.
a) programme of the contestant’s choice
• Category “C”, max. performance time: 25 min.
a) a piece from the Baroque period
b) a piece from the Classical period (J. Hayd, W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven, M. Clementi)
c) one or more pieces of the contestant’s choice
• Category “D”, max. performance time: 35 min.
a) a virtuosic Etude (F. Chopin, M. Moszkowski, F. Liszt, S. Rachmaninoff, etc.)
b) a polyphonic piece by J. S. Bach
c) one movement from a Classical Sonata (J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven)
d) one or more pieces of the contestant’s choice
• Category “E”
The competition will be divided into two rounds:
1) Preliminary round, max. performance time: 20 min.
a) a virtuosic Etude (F. Chopin, M. Moszkowski, F. Liszt, S. Rachmaninoff, etc.)
b) a polyphonic piece by J. S. Bach
c) one or more pieces of the contestant’s choice
2) Final round, max. performance time: 50 min.
d) a Classical Sonata (J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven)
e) one or more pieces of the contestant’s choice
N.B.: The Programme should be performed from memory (required for the Category E). Among
the pieces proposed by the candidate, compositions dedicated or inspired by the figure and
literary work of Dante Alighieri will be eligible to win a special prize.
VOICE COMPETITION
• Category “A”, max. performance time: 6 min.
a) one Lied or Aria by a composer from the 16th to 18th centuries
b) a piece of the contestant’s choice
• Category “B”, max. performance time: 9 min.
a) one Lied or Aria by a composer from the 16th to 18th centuries
b) a piece from the Classical period
c) a piece of the contestant’s choice
• Category “C”, max. performance time: 20 min.
a) a piece from the Classical period
b) one Lied by a composer of the 19th Century
c) one Opera Aria of the contestant’s choice
d) a piece of the contestant’s choice
• Category “D”, max. performance time: 30 min.
The competition will be divided into two rounds:
1) Preliminary round:
a) one Lied or Aria by a composer from the 17th - 18th centuries
b) one Lied by a composer from the 19th century
2) Final round:
c) one Lied by a composer from the 20th or 21st century
d) one Aria of the contestant’s choice from an Oratorio, Mass or Cantata
d) one Opera Aria of the contestant’s choice.
• Category “E”, max. performance time: 45 min.
The competition will be divided into two rounds:
1) Preliminary round:
a) one Lied or Aria by a composer from the 17th - 18th centuries (Pre-Classical period)
b) one Aria of the contestant’s choice from an Oratorio, Mass or Cantata
c) one Opera Aria of the contestant’s choice.
2) Final round:
c) one Lied by a composer from the 18th or 19th century
d) one Lied by a composer from the 20th or 21st century
e) one Opera or Operetta Aria of the contestant’s choice
f) a piece of the contestant’s choice
N.B.: The Programme should be performed from memory. Among the pieces proposed by the
candidate, compositions dedicated or inspired by the figure and literary work of Dante Alighieri
will be eligible to win a special prize.
Art. 4 – AUDITIONS
Due to the ongoing uncertainty related to the pandemic from Covid-19, the way the
Competition should go - live or online - will be communicated by May 3, 2021.
The competition schedule for the individual categories will be prepared after the draw of the
order of performance and will be announced by May 5, 2021. All auditions will be public (except
restrictive measures) and will be held at the Kulturni center Lojze Bratuž in Gorizia. Contestants
should enquire at the Competition Secretary office or on the website www.musicagoritiensis.eu
about the day and time of their audition.
Contestants are expected to arrive one hour before their audition for the roll call. Late entrants
may only be admitted at the sole discretion of the Jury.
Before their audition, contestants must present an official ID to the Competition Secretary office.
If the Competition is to be held in online mode, the Contestants must produce a video recording
of their program of the maximum duration indicated for each category (two separate records are
required for the categories divided into two parts). The candidate must upload the video to
his/her Youtube channel (or the Youtube channel of a parent or referent) with the title: "1.
International Music Competition "Musica Goritiensis"- Name and Surname - Category" and must
enter the program in the description. The link must be communicated to the Secretary of the
Competition with the application form at [email protected] by May, 15th, 2021.
Contestants will be excluded from the Competition if their own video does not meet the following
mandatory requirements:
• it must be a new videorecording expressly made for the 1. International Competition »Musica
Goritiensis« (old recordings or extracts presented on other occasions will not be allowed);
• the video must be recorded from an angle that doesn’t change, no edits are allowed and the
hands, the face and the instrument of the performer/performers have to be clearly visible.
• before starting their performance, the Contestant must introduce themselves (first name, last
name, category of the 1st International Competition » Musica Goritiensis«);
• the video recording cannot be modified or revised in any way and must have a good audio
quality (vertical pianos or electric keyboards are not accepted);
• no video effects (such as motion blur, guassian blur, fade, sharpen,transition,subtitles,etc.)nor
video and audio editings are allowed even between Contestants' introduction and the start of
their performance;
• the whole program must be performed and recorded from the beginning to the end with no
breaks;
• by submitting the registration the organization of the Competition is automatically authorized to
use this video free of charge for the purposes related to the Competition: sending the link to the
members of the jury and publication of the videos of the winners on social channels and on the
website;
• the video must be viewable at least until the end of the contest;
• the video recordings of the prize-winning contestants must be sent to the Secretary office at the
end of the competition.
Art. 6 – JURY
The Judging Panel will be composed of Conservatory/Academy teachers, professional musicians
and/or members of internationally renowned orchestras. The Jury members will make their votes
in secret (0 - 100); the average will be calculated, excluding the highest and lowest votes. The Jury
is composed of 5 members and its decisions are final and not subject to appeal. Should a jury
member be related, up to the 3rd degree, to a contestant, or have had a continuous didactic
relationship with a contestant during the last year, he or she shall refrain from participating in the
discussion and vote on the performance of such contestants. At the time of institution, each Jury
member make a statement on their personal relationship with the contestants in relation to the
above. Contestants are required to indicate the name of their teacher on the registration form.
The Jury may interrupt the performance if it exceeds the maximum time specified in the
competition regulation or for justified reasons. The Jury's decisions are final.
The Artistic Director may at any time call new members to the Jury or replace existing members.
Art. 7 – PRIZES
- Score of 95/100 and higher: Gold diploma
The contestants with the highest score in their own category will be awarded the overall first
prize.
- Score from 94/100 to 90/100: Silver diploma.
- Score from 89/100 to 85/100: Bronze diploma.
- The results will be announced at the end of each category’s competition. The winners of the
overall first prizes for each category must take part in the Awards Ceremony and Final Concert
held on June 2, 2021, otherwise the prize will not be awarded. The pieces to be performed will be
chosen by the Artistic Director and the Judging Panel.
- Results will be published from May, 29th to June 2nd, 2021.
- The winners of the overall first prizes for each category must take part in the Awards Ceremony
and Final Concert, which will be held in the summer 2021 on a date still to be decided. The pieces
to be performed will be chosen by the Artistic Director and the Judging Panel.
- First Prize winners can no longer participate in future editions of the competition in the same
category.
- The other prizes will be awarded after the publication of the classification for each category.
- The Judging Panel reserves the right not to award any prizes or to award "ex aequo” prizes,
"diplomas of merit" and/or "scholarships".
- In particular, the Judging Panel, for the 2021 edition of the Competition, will award a special
prize in the form of a concert to the contestant who presents and performs at best a piece
dedicated to or inspired by the figure and literary work of Dante Alighieri, on the 700th
anniversary of his death.
- All contestants will receive a diploma of participation.

CATEGORY “E” - 1st prize overall € 500,00 and a concert prize in the season of one of the cultural
institutions of our country.
