1. INTRODUCTION
wPTU Toolbox is a software program which, when installed on a laptop computer, provides diagnostic capability
and the ability to download software or upload data for Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) applications. wPTU Toolbox can
be used on AC or DC trucks.
Requirements for the laptop computer are as follows:
1. 500 Mhz processor speed, minimum
5. a standard serial cable with DB–9 male connector on one end and DB–9 female connector on the other end.
2. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: To download the software from the web, save the file setup.exe and then click on it to launch
installation.
To install the software from a CD, insert the CD containing the wPTU Toolbox files into the computer’s CD drive. If
the computer is configured to auto launch CD’s, the setup program will launch automatically. If it does not, browse to
the CD drive and click on the file setup.exe.

There are two modes of operation: Normal and Offline. The required mode is selected from the Startup screen
(Figure 12).
In the Normal mode, wPTU Toolbox communicates with the target (a computer in the truck’s vehicle control sys-
tem). wPTU Toolbox waits for a connection to be established and a correct password to proceed beyond the Startup
screen. (Figure 12). To start in Normal mode, use the following procedure:
1. Connect a serial cable between the laptop computer and the truck.
7
GEK–91712A, OHV wPTU Toolbox User’s Guide
6. The Main Window is displayed. The Title bar shows information regarding the connecting port and the baud
rate.
wPTU Toolbox will attempt to connect using all COM ports and all baud settings until a connection is established.
wPTU Toolbox communicates with the target through a RS–232 serial link. A strict protocol is followed to keep
wPTU Toolbox and the target synchronized during communication. The communication parameters for a specific
target may be configured using the Options menu.
In the Offline mode, wPTU Toolbox does not communicate with the target. If a connection has already been
established in Normal mode, wPTU Toolbox can transition to Offline mode by selecting the radio button in the Star-
tup screen. This stops all communication with the target.
3. Choose the panel to work with (only for AC PTU: PSC/TCI). If a panel isn’t chosen, a message window will
appear to prompt the user to select the panel type.
5. Click ‘LOGIN to wPTU Toolbox’ or press <Enter>. A typical list of truck types is displayed (Figure 15). The
type of trucks shown is dependent on the application.
6. Choose the truck type and select ‘OK’ or press <Enter> . The Main Window is displayed.
NOTE: The title bar will not have any connection information for offline.

2. Enter the password and select Program Panel button. The Startup screen is replaced by the screen shown in
Figure 16. The default target file names and baud rate will be automatically loaded. The settings may be
changed as needed.
4. Press OK. The panel programming starts. The status of each step, as it is being done, can be seen. If there are
any errors, it will be displayed in the message box (Figure 17).
5. When the programming is complete, the message ‘Panel programmed successfully. You may disconnect the
cable now’ is displayed.
NOTE: Though wPTU Toolbox has built–in error–recovery schemes, it is not advisable to disconnect
the cable while programming is in progress.
NOTE: Ensure that there is a minimum of ten minutes battery life available before starting a program
panel operation.
NOTE: The program panel operation may request the user to cycle power.

The Terminal Emulator mode is invoked by clicking the Terminal Emulator Mode button on the Startup Screen.
Terminal Emulator mode is a diagnostic tool that is not used during normal operation.
Clicking the Terminal Emulator Mode button suspends wPTU operation and displays a Hyperterm screen. A
data snapshot is shown. This mode is useful for CPU board troubleshooting or other diagnostic procedures that re-
quire viewing raw data.
3.2.5. Options
The mode in which wPTU Toolbox will start can be changed as needed. Go to Options–> Default Mode on the
Startup screen and select either ‘Normal’ or ‘Offline’ as the desired default mode (Figure 18).
wPTU Toolbox can communicate through the COM1 through COM8 serial ports on the laptop computer. wPT
Toolbox can be configured to search the ports for a target connection in a specified order. (For example, if the search
order is specified as COM2, COM1, wPTU first looks for a target connection at COM2. If COM2 is already being
used or not found, it tries COM1.) The default port is COM1 or COM2.
Go to Options –> Port on the Startup screen for this setting (Figure 19).
wPTU Toolbox is capable of communicating at any of the standard baud rates. The sequence of baud rates to be
tried when wPTU Toolbox starts up can be specified. The default baud rate for DC trucks is 9600 and for AC trucks,
38,400.
