PART - A Marks: 20 x 2 = 40

1. What is isotope effect in superconductivity?


2. What are high Tc superconductors? Give an example.
3. What is magnetic leviation?
4. What is SQUID?
5. Name four high Tc superconductors.
6. Define Hysteresis loss ?
7. What is meant by internal field in dielectrics?
8. Explain electro chemical breakdown in dielectric.
9. If an ionic crystal is subjected to an electric field of 1000 V/m and the resulting
polarisation is 4.3x10-8 cm2. Calculate the relative permittivity of NaCl?
10. Define ferroelectricity..
11. What do you mean by carrier concentration in metals?

18. Distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors.
19. The sample of silicon is doped with 1016phosphor atoms/m3. Find the hall voltage in
a sample with thickness 500 mm, area of cross section 2.25 X 10-3 m2, current 1A
and magnetic field 10 X 104 Wb/m2.
20. Differentiate semiconductor from that of conductor and insulator with band diagram
and other properties.

21. Give the postulates of free electron theory, and based on it, drive an expression for
the electrical conductivity.
22. (i) What is meant by density of energy states. Obtain an expression for the same.
(ii) Calculate the fermi energy of copper. The atomic weight and density of copper
are 63.54 and 8950 kg/m3 respectively.
23. Derive the expression for the number of electrons per unit volume in the conduction
band of N-type extrinsic semiconductor. Also discuss about the variation of Fermi
level with respect to temperature and impurity.
24. Obtain the expression of density of holes in the valence band of a P-type extrinsic
semiconductor and discuss the variation of Fermi level with respect to temperature
and concentration of hole.

25. i) What is ferromagnetism?


ii) Explain the reason for the formation of domain structure in ferromagnetic
material and how the hysteresis curve is explained on the basis of the domain
theory?
26. i) What are the different types of polarisation in dielectrics? Explain them.
ii) Deduce Clausius-Mosotti equation to determine the dipole moment of a polar
molecule.

27. i) Differentiate Polar and Non-polar Molecules.


ii) Differentiate Active and Passive dielectrics.
iii) Define Breakdown. Explain the types of breakdown
