ASSIGNMENT NO. 4
But, since Islam rapidly spread in the Philippines for many years and Muslims
resisted accepting calling themselves Moros and were against Spanish Government, it
caused a clash between Muslims and Spaniards. The Moros rebelled to defend their
rights to self-govern, preserved their culture against what they saw as a foreign and
Christian assault. Due to the Spanish colonial oppression, the Moros build hatred, and
the identity of Muslims from the Philippines shaped into what it is today.
2. Did the Spaniards succeed in Influencing Islams?
According to Dr. Cesar Adib Majul, the resistance of Muslims was described as
the Moro wars and in his analysis, there were six stages in Moro Wars. During Spanish-
Moro War, Spaniards assumed that if they toppled the Mindanao area, it would be
easier for them to spread their power to Sulu and Brunei. But they found a fierce armed
Muslim resistance and political power to oppose in these areas. They succeed in
invading Muslim settlement in Manila under Rajah Sulayman in 1571. Also, they
invaded Brunei that destroyed the sphere of influence of Islam in the northern part of the
Philippines that forced Sulu Sultanate to stay in the South. The Spaniards made it to the
Sulu Archipelago to explore and even threatened to attack. However, Muslim Ethnic
groups from different provinces were strongly united to fight for their cultures and
beliefs. The Moro-Spanish War ended when the American Colonizers came.
