A Letter From The
Vicar
Rise up and Build

They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.
Nehemiah 2:18b.

We as the MCSI Congregation is at the threshold of our entry in to

another decade of Christian ministry and witness. It’s a right time for all of
us to respond to the call of God and the vocation of our spiritual witness.
We need to evaluate our call to be a part of our church.

What’s the difference between profession and Vocation?

Profession is what you do or act basically to earn a living and broadly to

contribute to the society and world at large. It’s the career that you
undertake and what you have set to progress in life. Vocation on the other
hand, what we are called to do with our life. It’s a commitment to labour
selflessly for a higher purpose. For example, a priest who is successful in
some field is asked by his bishop to move. He obeys. For him vocation is
greater than success in his profession.

Why build? God is interested in people and their wellbeing. Why did
Nehemiah and his people build? What prompted them to do it? Its when
you think selflessly for the good of others and the betterment of our
communities. When Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem was in Despair, shame
and being mocked and the temple was in ruin and its wall were destroyed,
he got the motivation to rise and build. He considers the situation as an
abomination to God’s holy name. Unlike the people who built the tower of
babel, Nehemiah and his people had a great zeal to honour the Lord glorify
his Name among the nations.
Nehemiah didn’t promise big things to his people. He offered
them toil and sleepless nights. Once Winston Churchill, the
former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom said “I have nothing
to offer you but bloodshed, toil, tears and sweat.” It’s on this call,
many people worked hard for the country to rebuild its ruins.

DO we have a passion to build up our church? Someone once

said, “When people work together, things happen. When good
people work together good things happen. But when good
people work together with God, eternal things happen.” If you
have a vision to build, talk about it have good intentions and
complete trust in the one who has called you. Nehemiah had a
clear vision.

God called Nehemiah to do the impossible. He had to face lots of

oppositions, discouragement, fights, mockery. But he had great
determination and strategy to construct the wall and every
member of his team had a vocation to minister and labour. He
took the assistance of ordinary people and their families. He with
them co-created the confidence and skills, resolved conflicts,
negotiated solutions, and welcomed the perspectives of others.
Finally succeeded in building up basically the harmony among
people thus completing the task of building the walls of
Jerusalem within a few days.

As we continue to join hands for the advancement of this

blessed congregation, let us ask for divine wisdom and guidance
to fulfil the tasks entrusted to us- “Arise and Build.”
