C. Answer the following questions.

1. What is the proper way to carry a microscope?

• The proper way to carry or handle a microscope with outmost care is to always use both
hands while carrying it, in which one hand is holding the the microscope arm and the
other hand is under the microscope base.

2. What is the purpose of the objectives?

• The objectives are the most important part of the microscope and it contains three or
four lenses with different types of functions, these lenses of a microscope provides a
magnification power that magnifies microscopic specimens to over 100x of its original
size. The purpose of having objectives is to gather and focus light on a certain
specimen which is focused to produce majority of its image enhancement or
magnification of its real image.

3. What is the difference between the fine and coarse adjustments?

• The coarse adjustment knob of a microscope is used to move the stage (up & down) to
bring the specific specimen into the right focus and this knob can be found on the arm of
the microscope, on the other hand the fine adjustment knob is used to bring the
specimen into sharp focus under low power and this is also used for focusing when
using high power lenses, this knob can be located inside the coarse adjustment knob.

4. What is the total magnification power of your microscope under the following operating
conditions?

OBJECTIVE OCULAR TOTAL MAGNIFICATION (X)

4x 10 x ({4x} x {10x}) = 40x
10x 10 x ({10x} x {10x}) = 100x
40x 10 x ({40x} x {10x}) = 400x
Note: Pls. show your solutions!

5. What happens to the intensity of light as you adjust the diaphragm? Explain your answer.
• Well, the diaphragm controls the intensity of light that passes through the slide to light
up a certain specimen and it depends on how you adjust it, if you adjust the diaphragm
openly full or to a wide diameter it provides a maximum amount of light but if you adjust
the diaphragm to its narrow diameter.
