Generation Z and How Technology Affected Them
There is debate regarding when Generation Z begins,
however some experts believe the oldest members of Generation Z are high school seniors of 2010. Gen Z is known as the most technologically advanced generation, but it’s somewhat more of a jinx than a blessing. You see, we kids, teenagers, and adults have grown up with technology around our surroundings. From technoligical appliances like refrigerators and television, to various “couch-potato” activities like playing video games, computer games, and having access to any type of movie at our fingertips. So it's only understandable that we're more used to and informed in it.
By now, only few individuals want to go outside because of
how technology has been introduced to us at an early age; instead, they would prefer to tweet and rant about random stuff or play a video game for hours. Because the inside life is so appealing, most of us go outside less and avoid working, which explains why at least one-third of teenagers are overweight and around one-fifth are obese. A lot of us can text, read, watch, chat, and eat at the same time, which is very surprising for most adults. Any information we need to know, any news we have to check for, or any person we to find are all just one click from your phones or computers. We all have grown irritated if we don’t immediately find the things we need as a result of all of these answers and information being so readily available from our computers. Gen Z is stunned by the concept of taking and wasting time. A few of us don't like to read books or articles, do chores and activites, or say anything because it takes time. Because of this, using abbreviations as another way of texting has become prevalent and more popular. According to my research, teenagers text a whopping 2,900 times every month on average. Our talking, communicating, and socializing skills are decreasing as a result of cyber communication. Because of Generation Z's short attention spans, teaching us has become more difficult, thus teachers have turned to more technologically advanced methods of instruction. Because society will not go backwards, we are all adapting to this new way of life alongside technology.
Generation Z has a big difference from other generations.
Most of the teenagers and young adults in this generation have grown out from racism, homophobia, or inequality. According to Insider Intelligence, “Generation Z, is the youngest, most ethically- diverse, and largest generation in American history, comprising 27% of the US population. Pew Research recently defined Gen Z as anyone born after 1997. Gen Z grew up with technology, the internet, and social media, which sometimes causes them to be stereotyped as tech-addicted, anti-social, or “social justice warriors.” Another thing I have heard about is that this generation is the most hugely influenced by technology. Mental health professionals have said that all of the technology is causing “acquired attention deficit disorder.” I've checked my phone around five times ever since I’ve started writing this speech which should have been finished 3 days ago, and yet, I'm still focused on finishing this speech; for all I know, they're correct. Most of us feel as if we are killing time if we aren't working on at least five things at once. However, because we are multitasking, each chore, activity, or task we try to do has lesser influence on us and takes much more longer than if we had just done things one at a time. This is causing us to lose our capacity to analyze and understand complicated information; if anything takes a lot of time to figure out, we become agitated. I'm willing to bet that most of my classmates who started this article didn't complete this in under 2 hours because of how we easily get distracted by things and because of how people like me get easily annoyed if I can’t immedia find the data I need to find.

Teaching Generation Z has grown more difficult due to our short attention spans, thus teachers have moved to more technologically advanced methods of instruction. The majority of this generation's youth and young adults have overcome racism, homophobia, and inequity. We've come a long way, and now it's up to us to deal with these benefits while maintaining our work ethic. With the advancement of technology, we have lost the patience and work ethic of previous generations. The next step is to figure out how to make both of these coexist.
