What’s New

Read the following autobiography.

My Autobiography
I am Mary Shae B. Migano. I was born in Makati City on November 19, 2006. I
have two sisters. They are Christine and Thea. I also have one brother whose name is
Paul. I am the youngest of them all. My mother is Theresita B. Migano. She is a teacher
by profession. My father is Noel M. Migano. He is a retired seaman.
I studied at St. Paul College of Makati during my preparatory year until fourth
grade. I transferred to Cembo Elementary School when I was in my fifth grade because
of my health problems. I continued to study there throughout my sixth grade. When I
studied in CES, I became confident of myself. I was able to learn how to speak well in
Filipino. Moreover, I improved my mathematical skills effectively.
The memory I cherished the most was when my mother gave me a piggy bank as
a graduation present. I was so happy. She encouraged me to save a part of my allowance
and put them in it. She taught all of us how to spend our money wisely by being thrifty.
Later on, she introduced to us the value of money-saving in the bank.
When I was in my sixth and seventh grade, I became a journalist. I became a
feature writer at first. Then, I became a science and technology writer. I have contributed
several articles in our school paper.
My hobbies are dancing, reading, singing, writing, watching television, and
playing mobile games. This school year, I am an incoming eighth-grader at Sto. Niño
Catholic School.
In this time of pandemic, I will not be able to interact with my classmates and my
teachers physically. Through the Genyo e-Learning and modular activities that were
prepared by our school, we can adapt to this new way of learning. I hope other learners
like me will continue to pursue their studies. It is kind of hard, but with the proper
guidance of our teachers and through the help and support of our parents, the
impossible becomes possible.

What is It
Discuss the following questions to the students.
1. Who wrote the autobiography? _____________________________________
2. When was her birthday? ___________________________________________
3. How old is she? ____________________________________________________
4. How many siblings does she have? _________________________________
5. What is her mother’s name? _______________________________________

and move your body to the beat of "Baby Shark.” We
can still dance and be happy.

Wow! Good job! How do you feel while dancing? Did you enjoy dancing
and moving like sharks? But are you afraid of sharks? What do you know about
sharks? This paragraph gives you more information about sharks.

Sharks are prodigious animals because of their unequalled size and

strength. A hungry shark attacks its prey viciously. The victim dies in a cruel
and violent manner. That is the reason why people fear the animal. Sharks
have bad reputation because many believe that they typically attack human
beings. In reality, sharks rarely attack but do so only when provoked by
hunters who invade their territory.

What is It
One technique to help you figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words in
a sentence without using a dictionary is to look for clues in the sentence.
Oftentimes, writers leave hints to the readers to help them understand the words
better. These clues are called context clues.
There are different types of context clues. We will talk about these in this
lesson.
A. Synonyms
Let us look at the given example.

A hungry shark attacks its prey viciously. The victim dies in a cruel and
violent manner.
The unfamiliar word is viciously.
Is there a word or group of words in the sentences that give/s you a clue to the
meaning of the word viciously? What are these words?
__________________________________________________________________________
How did these words help you to understand the meaning of the word viciously?
__________________________________________________________________________
The context clue that is used in the example is synonym. Vicious is similar
in meaning as cruel and violent. Viciously is an adverb that means cruel and
violent manner.
B. Antonyms

Sharks have bad reputation because many believe that they typically
attack human beings. In reality, sharks rarely attack but do so only when
provoked by hunters who invade their territory.
The word typically is the unfamiliar word in the paragraph.

4
What word is used in the paragraph gives you a clue to understand the meaning
of typically?
__________________________________________________________________________
How did this word help you to understand the meaning of the word typically?
__________________________________________________________________________

The context clue used in this example is antonym. Typically and rarely are
opposite words.

C. Affixes

Sharks are prodigious animals because of their unequalled size and

strength.

The unfamiliar word in this sentence is unequalled.

The word unequalled is made up of a prefix and a root word. Can you name
them?
+ + (ed) past participle form of the verb
(prefix) (root word)

The prefix –un as used in this word means not or without. Something that is
not equal or without equal is without a match. Therefore, unequalled means
superior. A prefix is used to give clue to the unfamiliar word.

Beating the Quarantine Boredom

By Rodelio D. Tolentino

I was extremely bored staying at home during the quarantine. I cannot

get out of our home and I terribly missed playing in the park with my friends.
Wanting for something to do, I surfed through my Facebook account. The
only things that were happening were the usual status posts and some
throwback posts. I felt disappointed, but I continued surfing nonetheless.
Then I saw it. Great! Between the “how I feel today” and “remember the
days”, I found the cutest little pet wanting a home. I was sure I would be the
best person to look after him, for I have lots of time to take care of him properly.
I called the person through Messenger, and asked them to deliver the pet to my
address. Now, I have my own iguana, and he is adorable.

4
Comprehension Check:
1. How does the character feel?
2. If you were the character, would you adopt an iguana?
3. Knowing that iguanas are endangered species, what are you going to do?
4. What would you advise the character?
5. How do you show concern to endangered animal species?

Share your idea on how to beat boredom.

Lesson
Complex Sentences
1
This lesson will teach you what makes complex sentences different from simple
and compound sentences. To check how much you have learned from the
previous lesson, let us do the following activity.

What’s In

Directions: The following group of words inside the ball are clauses. Write I if
the clause can stand alone and expresses a complete thought and D if it is not.
Write your answer inside the ring.

Are you still angry
with me?

Joanna: I haven’t Janelle: I was never

seen you. That mad at you. I’ve just

with me?

Notice that the first dialog sounds better. Joanna’s statement makes more sense
and flows more easily because of the use of a complex sentence. Wouldn’t you
like to sound just as good as the speakers in the dialog?

What is It
Read the following sentences:

1. It started to rain, so Raymon and Samuel had to run inside.

2. Since it was raining outside, Jude brought out his umbrella.
3. Trishia works very hard so she can be an achiever.
4. Paris became a doctor because he wanted to help others.
5. Mylene won the contest because she trained every day.

The sentences presented are classified as complex sentences. A complex

sentence is made up of an independent and dependent clause. An independent
clause is a simple sentence that gives a complete thought and can stand alone.
A dependent or subordinate clause is a clause that does not give a complete
thought, it starts with a subordinating conjunction such as because, so, since,
if, unless, after, etc. and cannot stand alone.
3
The complex sentences that were presented show cause-effect
relationship. Because, so, since and if are commonly used subordinating
conjunctions. A cause is a reason why something happens. An effect is the
result or what happens because of something.
