Unit 10 test 40 marks

A good ending
1 When I was asked to write this article about the best job I have ever had, I
knew right away which job that was. However, I have had other jobs, and
each of them has had good and bad aspects, so I decided to write about them
first.
2 The first real job I had was as a helper in our local library. Although it was not
very well paid and it was sometimes boring, I worked with wonderful people
and a great manager. It gave me confidence that I could do a good job, even
though I was only 20 years old. Before that, when I was younger, I worked on
weekends helping my father. I used the money for clothes and books. But it
wasn’t the same thing. My father was family, so his approval was less
important to me than the library manager’s.
3 The next serious job I had was as a cashier in a bank. I had finished my
training in accountancy the year before, but it was not easy to find work. I
was glad to get this job in a good bank in my home town. The skills I learned
there have helped me throughout my life, especially having to learn to deal
with customers. But, again, it was not the best job I have had, mainly because
the hours were very long, and it wasn’t very interesting.
4 I moved from the bank into two other similar jobs before I got my current
work. This happened because I was really lucky. I was at a friend’s house for
dinner one evening when another guest asked about my dress. She wanted to
know where I had bought it. I explained that I had designed and made it
myself, and she was amazed! She explained that she owned a fashion
company, and asked if I was interested in working for her. Obviously I said,
“Yes,” and I told her about the fashion design course I had taken at college,
before I went to work in the library. She said that would help, but that they
would provide their own training. So, I took their training course, which
lasted a year, and started work as a junior designer. Now, eighteen years
later, I am head designer for all of their women’s clothing, and I can honestly
say I have enjoyed every minute. This is my best job, no question!
