Guidelines for Literature Review

Literature review (Final Paper)

Purpose: students will use the knowledge of summarising, developing
arguments, APA styles, critique, and commentary to write a literature review
on a research scope of their choice.
Task:
1. Follow guidelines on how to write a literature review.
2. Use relevant academic writing skills such as summarising, developing
arguments, APA styles, critique, and commentary
3. Develop arguments in relation to the research scope and identify the research
gap
Notes: All papers should be typed, double-spaced. If you plan on
turning a paper in for another course, be sure you receive permission
from your other professor/instructor to work on the paper in this class.
All papers must be original for this class—they cannot be ones you
have written for a different course in the past.
Criterion-referenced grading is used in this course.

DUE DATE & SUBMISSION

1. Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 23:59 am
2. Submit a soft copy to Graduate Office following the office’s guidelines for
submissions ([email protected]). Prior to submission, ensure your paper is checked
using Turnitin (contact university library for help – email [email protected] using
your university email account provided). Be reminded that violation of university
academic integrity regulations will result in penalties. Also submit an electronic copy
via Google Classroom for grading. Be sure to save a copy for your records.
3. You will need to complete an “Assignment Cover Sheet,” which has been provided to
you via email.
4. For the paper copy, please submit a copy of the first page of each of the four
journal articles that you review.
5. The literature review is worth 60% of total your total grade for the course.

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS:
o Have been made available on Google Classroom. You may find these materials
beneficial.

FORMATTING:
1. You must follow the “Literature Review Template” included below. On your paper,
include each section heading (e.g., Section 1: Introduction).
2. Your literature review must be typed.
3. Number each page of the literature review.
4. Your literature review will be no more than 13 double-spaced pages using 12-point
size Times New Roman font and standard margins (top/bottom 2.54cm each;
left/right 3.17cm each). Neither the assignment cover sheet nor the reference list
count towards the 13 page limit.
5. Please do not exceed the page limit. If you exceed the page limit, your end mark will
be lowered by one letter (e.g., an A- would drop to a B+). The rationale is that if a
student who exceeds the word limit receives a higher mark than a student who does
not exceed the word limit, then the student with the lower mark can argue that the
student who exceeded the work limit had an unfair advantage.

DIRECTIONS FOR WRITING THE LITERATURE REVIEW:

o Use in-text citation and provide a reference list at the end of your review. Follow the
American Psychology Association format guidelines (APA 7th edition) as you will need
to use this format throughout your graduate career. The reference list does NOT count
towards the 13 page limit.
o It is crucial that you write an original research critique that does not borrow or
duplicate what other students in this class have written. Submitting non-original
work will result in an E.
The literature review will include the following five sections (see below). I have provided
approximate page lengths, but the length is less important than the quality. But be sure your
paper does not exceed 13 pages in length (not including the cover sheet or references).
Literature Review Template

Section 1: Introduction (1-2 pages)

o Provide a clear explanation of the topic, including definitions of key terms
o Explain why your topic is important
o Provide a brief overview of what is covered in the review.

Section 2: Method (1 page or less)

o Describe the search strategy you used, including the databases and other sources, the
search terms, and the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the selection of the four
articles.

Section 3: Overview of Articles (4-5 pages)

o Summarize each article including the topic, participants, methods, and main findings.
o Explicitly link each article to the topic.

Section 4: Discussion of Articles (4-5 pages)

o Identify general themes that emerged from the articles.
o Identify methodological issues that exist for doing research on this topic.
o Identify directions for future research.
o Identify implications for education.

Section 5: Conclusion (1 page or less)

o Summarize the review

When we mark your paper, it should be obvious to us what you intend to communicate
through your answers. If your explanations are unclear, then we do not have adequate
evidence that you understand the information. Please provide detailed and clear
explanations, but keep in mind the page limit.
