Lesson Idea 3 BPT
Content Standards SB1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze the
nature of the relationships between structures and functions in living
cells.
1a.Construct an explanation of how cell structures and organelles
(including nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts,
lysosome, Golgi, endoplasmic reticulum, vacuoles, ribosomes, and
mitochondria) interact as a system to maintain homeostasis
Technology Standards 1. Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing,
achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals,
informed by the learning sciences.
1b. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves
their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways
Bloom’s Taxonomy List by name the level(s) of Bloom’s addressed within this lesson:
Levels Remembering, Understanding, Applying
Integration Level Level 3: Exploration
Universal Design Reflect upon the activity you have planned for the students. The technology
Rationale tool you selected for this lesson idea should attempt to support ALL students.
Thinking about the UDL principles, how does this activity and the technology
tools you selected support and enhance the learning experience for students
in the classroom? (The UDL Wheel may help you identify the ways this
activity and selected technology tool will support Engagement,
Representation or Action and Expression components of the UDL
framework.)
Lesson Idea I have assigned partners for a collaborative project explaining functions of
organelles in different types of cells. I created guideline that states that each
pair will do research to find out the role of each organelle in its appropriate
setting (eukaryotic vs. prokaryotic). Together, they will design a slide that will
be added to a PowerPoint and later presented to the class. Linked on their
class page is a rubric for how they will be assessed. During the presentation
(each pair’s slide onto a single PowerPoint), students are to take notes on
each organelle and its function, structure, and location. This will take about
two class periods. To take this to a higher level of learning, students can
submit a question about their assigned organelle on a Google Form and I will
make the quiz from their questions. To differentiate learning, students may
take notes however they please. Some may prefer to use Word, Pages or
Docs. Others might prefer pen and paper. Also, assigning the student a
partner can help weaker students (Stronger students may have to explain,
and this benefits both learners). Feedback will be included on the rubric and
the quiz.
Design Reflection After designing this lesson idea, reflect on the following:
I feel that the students will be able to use their personal strength in this
lesson. By letting students have the autonomy of their slide, they can learn
and apply their learning style to the slide to have full mastery of their
organelle. Also, learning from their peers and using their own language can
help them better understand functions of the organelle. To further extend the
lesson, I could have them create a review game to prepare for their quiz or
create a storyline about their organelle (narrative). This would bring reading
comprehension into the lesson and promote it with their classmates.
