Eleven Fundamental Data Operations
There are eleven fundamental data operations which, as logical processing steps, a computer uses to
prepare data for human use as information.
These are the given fundamental data operations appropriate to dental informatics: Identify the ff; Cite
an example.
Example: A form completed by a customer buying a car from a showroom is an example of a data
capture form.
2. Data Verification - is a process in which different types of data are checked for accuracy and
inconsistencies after data migration is done. It helps to determine whether data was accurately
translated when data is transferred from one source to another, is complete, and supports
processes in the new system.
Example: An example of this includes double entry of data (such as when creating a password or email)
to prevent incorrect data input.
Example: During the process of sorting letters in a post office, the letters are classified according to the
cities and further arranged according to streets.
Example: Data arrangement with explained and explanatory variables in different columns is preferred
for more advanced experimental designs.
5. Aggregation - is the process of combining things. That is, putting those things together so that
we can refer to them collectively.
Example: think about the phone numbers on your cell phone. You can refer to them individually - your
mother's number, your best friend's number, etc. But it's easier to think of them collectively, as your
phone number list. It is also important to realize that each member of the aggregation still has the
properties of the whole. In other words, each phone number in the list remains a phone number. The
process of combining them has not altered them in any way.
6. Decomposition - It involves breaking down a complex problem or system into smaller parts that
are more manageable and easier to understand. The smaller parts can then be examined and
solved, or designed individually, as they are simpler to work with.
Example: understanding how a bicycle works is more straightforward if the whole bike is separated into
smaller parts and each part is examined to see how it works in more detail.
7. Calculation - is any type of calculation that includes both arithmetical and non-arithmetical
steps and which follows a well-defined model (e.g. an algorithm).
Example: Most often the term is used with computers. Data storage devices can permanently hold data,
like files.
9. Retrieval - Retrieval is the act of getting something back, or of accessing stored data and files in
a computer.
Example: An example of retrieval is when you access a file that you saved on a hard drive on
your computer.
10. Reproduction - reproducing an original signal conveyed as main data by a data medium with
medium protection data which are specific to the data medium being conveyed together with
the main data, the apparatus includes a section for generating apparatus protection data which
are specific to the reproduction apparatus, a section for combining the apparatus protection
data with the medium protection data to define a protection level, and a section for applying
the protection level to restrict reproduction of the original signal, with stepwise variations in
restriction occurring in accordance with changes in protection level.
11. Communication Computers in the Dental Industry - It deals with the management of
information, communication and application of new technologies in clinical practice and
research. Information management involves the storage and use of information generated in
direct work with patients in a dental office, it includes the organization of work and arranging
visits and operation of dental practice.
Example: such as communication, patient record management, recall and recare systems
a) Dental Dealers – work as intermediaries between manufacturers of dental products and dental
practitioners to help identify the specific needs of private practices, provide regular customer
service and ultimately sell the latest and most advanced dental equipment that manufacturers
have to offer.
b) Bar-Coding – system is a way of collecting data from the mobile. Even a huge amount of data
can be stored in that. It can be easily incorporated during acrylization of the denture and thus
could be helpful in identification.
Examples: Record keeping, Appliance identification, patient’s education, Forensic Application and etc.
Example: The hospital began using a webcam to create a digital image of the medication selected for
removal from the pharmacy stock by the nursing supervisor.
Examples: 3D printing, digital scanning material, and the process of growing bio teeth from stem cells
represent major steps forward in science and technology.
