Quadratic Equations
An equation of the type 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0 where a, b, c
are real numbers and a≠0 is called Quadratic equation.

Eg. 1. 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1 = 0 ; Here a=1, b=2, c=1

2. 2𝑥 2 = 0 ; Here a=2, b=0, c=0
3. 3𝑥 2 − 2 = 0 ; Here a=3, b=0, c=-2

Roots of Quadratic Equations

A real number α is called a root of the quadratic equation
𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0, a≠0 if α𝑥 2 + α𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0.
We also say that x= α is a solution of the quadratic
equation.
Roots of a quadratic equation by Factorization
Ex.1. Find the roots of quadratic equation 2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 3 = 0

Nature of Roots
A quadratic equation 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0, a≠0 has
i. two distinct real roots if 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐 > 0
ii. two equal real roots if 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐 = 0
iii. no real roots if 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐 < 0

 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐 is called Discriminant of the quadratic

equation 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0.
Ex.2.Find the roots of quadratic equation 𝑥2 + 𝑥 + 1 = 0
by using quadratic formula.
Soln. 𝑥2 + 𝑥 + 1 = 0
Here a=1, b=1, c=1
−𝑏± 𝑏 2 −4𝑎𝑐
By quadratic formula, x =
2𝑎
Now 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐 = 1 − 4= -3 < 0
Hence the given quadratic equation has no real roots.
