PRELIMINARY DESIGN

Preliminary Design of the flexural members if the structural systems, i.e., slabs and
beams, are worked out as per the limit state of serviceability consideration checking on
deflection criteria confirming to IS 456:2000.

Preliminary Design of the compression member, i.e., column is worked out from the net
vertical axial load on the column lying in the ground floor assuming suitable percentage
of steel. However, only very small percentage of steel takes up the compression force and
rest is used for the tensile and lateral forces that may act upon the structure.

Preliminary Design of RCC Slab Element

The preliminary design of RCC slab for the floor and roof of the proposed building is
based on fulfillment of deflection control criteria of IS 456:2000 and behavior of floor
slab as a rigid diaphragm in earthquake resistant design based on IS 1893:2002.

For design of slab

The project building has largest slab area of 4.876m X 5.791m.

lx = 4876mm (i.e. the smallest of the two dimensions of the slab)

ly = 5791mm (i.e. the largest of the two dimensions of the slab)

ly 5791
= =1.187< 2
lx 4876

Hence the slab is two-way continuous slab.

From IS 456:2000 Clause 23.2

span (l )
=32¿ 40 (based on deflection criteria)
effective depth ( d )

Considering,

l
=32
d

Longest of the shortest span from plan(l) = 4.876m

4876
d= =152.4 mm ≈ 160 mm
32

Consider 10mm Ø bar and clear cover(cc) = 15mm

Overall depth(D) = d +cc +
2

10
= 160+15+
2

= 180mm

The obtained depth of slab is too high so we restrict overall depth of the slab to 150mm
and provide secondary beams similar to primary beams.

i.e. D = 150mm

Overall depth(D) = d +cc +
2

10
150 = d +15+ ≫ d=130 mm
2

Provide slab thickness of 150mm.

Preliminary Design of RCC Beam Element

From the architectural plan of the proposed building, the maximum span length of the
beam is 5.791m c/c at 3-5.
Maximum span 5.791m c/c at 3-5 is taken. Preliminary Design is done by Deflection
Control Criteria.

Design by deflection control criteria

The methodical steps in designing the beam element preliminarily with respect to IS
456:2000, IS 1893, IS13920, IS 4326 are same as the slab element.
From Clause 23.2IS 456:2000 we can draw out the following methodical steps to get
minimum depth of beam;
span (l)
≤
effectivedepth(d )

Where,

Span (l)= 5.7912 m= 5791.2mm (i.e. the largest available span length from the floor
plan.)

OR,
span (l )
=10¿ 14 (based on deflection criteria)
effective depth ( d )

And,

d
=1.5 ¿ 2
B

Considering,

l
=14
d

Longest span from plan (l) = 5.791m

5791.2
d= =413.657 mm ≈ 450 mm
14
Consider 20mm Ø bar and clear cover(cc) = 40mm

Overall depth(D) = d +cc +
2

20
= 450+ 40+
2

= 500mm

Also,

d
=1.5
B

500
B= =333.33 mm ≈ 450 mm
1.5

Adopt Beam D×B = (550 × 450) mm.

PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF COLUMN
In our plan elevation, we chose B3 column which has maximum influence area of 24.62
a m2 excluding the area of column. It is the intermediate column
and carries maximum axial load. The column of basement is
b designed and it has maximum size than above all. It contains
maximum percentage of steel reinforcement. We have considered
maximum 3% of steel reinforcement. We consider M30 grade
mix and Fe500 bars in the column. Assume initial size as
600*600 mm2.

Load Calculation:
Self-weight of slab(A) = γ c × D× a ×b

= 25×0.15×4.572×5.385

A = 92.325kN

Self-weight of beam(B)= γ c × B × D×(a+ b)

= 25×0.45×0.55×(4.572+5.385)

B = 61.6089kN

Masonry wall load(C) = γ m ×width ×height ×(a+b)

= 19×0.1016*(4.572+5.385) *(3.048-0.55)

C = 48.014kN

Floor Finish Load(D) = 1.632kN /m2 × a× b

= 1.632×4.572×5.385

D = 40.18kN

Live Load on general floor(E) = 3 kN /m2 ×a × b*0.25

= 3×4.572×5.385*0.25

E = 18.465kN

Weight of secondary beam(F) = γ c × B × D×(a+ b)

= 25*0.23*0.400*4.572/2

F = 5.258kN

Total Load= ( A+ B+C+ D+ E+ F )

= (92.325+61.6089+48.014+40.18+18.465+5.258)

= 265.8359kN

Self-Weight of column= 10% of Total Load

=0.1*265.8359kN

=26.58kN

Total Load including self-weight of column(P)

= (265.8359+26.58) * No. of Storey

=2339.32372 kN

Considering, FOS = 1.50,

Ultimate Load(Pu) = P ×1.50

= 2339.32372× 1.50

Pu = 3508.99kN

Assume, % of steel = 1.5%

Grade of concrete = M30

Grade of steel = Fe 500

From IS 456-2000 Clause 39.3,

Axially loaded member in compression is designed as,

P u = 0.4 f ck Ac +0.67 f y A sc

Or, 3508.99×103 = 0.4×30×98.5×Ag+ 0.67×500×1.5/100×Ag

On solving, Ag = 208310.4779mm2

Considering square column,

l 2 = Ag

l = 456.4104mm≈ 600 mm

Adopt Primary Column L×B = (600×600) mm.
