Also known as Urticaria, hives is an allergic reaction when the
skin becomes red or welts which can be found in different parts
of the body. About 20% have experienced having hives in
their lifetime. It develops when there is a reaction to the active
immune cells in the part of the skin that causes the skin to welt.
Hives will fade if the body will have no allergic reaction. Hives
can be worrisome in physical activities and during sleep. There
are also types of hives such as:
● Acute urticaria - this type of hives can last less than 6 weeks and the most causes of
this are food and medicine intake, infection or inflammatory, physical contact with objects
and insect bites.
● Chronic urticaria - this type of hive can last more than 6 week. This type of hives are
common with people who have thyroid problems, hepatitis, and cancer. This types of
hives is not contagious and in most cases chronic urticaria is not permanent and can be
treated.
● Physical urticaria - this type of hive is caused by the actual reaction of the skin due to
exposed environment such as sunlight and extreme cold. Exercise, pressure, and
vibration can also cause hives.

● Redness of the skin in any parts of the body.
● Appearance of welts in any size.
● Swelling in the parts of the body such as the lips, eyes,
and throat area.
● Difficult to breathe.
● Tightness in the chest area.
● Wheezing
● Dizziness
● Nausea
● Abdominal pain
Causes - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The most common causes are food intake, mediations, and
infection or inflammation. Futhermoremore, insect bites and
other diseases can cause hives. People who have
experienced hives, the most common allergic reactions into
foods are nuts, chocolates, fish, milk, and berries. Others had
hives due to medicine intake such as aspirins and
anti-inflammatory medicines or pills. Furthermore, infections in
the body and stress can also cause hives to patients as the
body reacts to allergens.

● Sleep in a cool room but do not exceed the optimal temperature.
● Avoid eating foods that trigger allergic reactions or intaking medicines that cause allergic
reactions.
● If the patient has been bitten by insects, put a cool compress or damp the infected area
with wet cloth.
● Patients must test their body into which food or drug their body is sensitive in order to be
prescribed with proper medications.
● Blood testing can also prevent the unseen disease for chronic hives that can affect the
thyroid and immune system.
Treatments - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Medical professionals can prescribe the person who
has hives with Antihistamines to prevent the body
from causing hives or to ease the swelling and redness
of the skin if the patients have acute urtica. People who
suffer from chronic hives will be prescribed different
drugs such as Omalizumab. To patients that may have
severe hives, they will be treated by the medical
professionals by injecting drugs such as epinephrine or
cortisone. Oral steroids can be prescribed by medical professionals to patients with chronic
hives to relieve the effect of hives.
