3. Review- Ask questions from the previous lesson.
What are the factors affecting volcanoes eruptive style?
4. Motivation
A. ACTIVITY
Group activity- each group will answer the fact storming tree web wherein
the first group will list down all the good effects of volcanic eruption and
the second group will list down all the bad effects of a volcanic eruption.
Each group will discuss their answers in front of the class.
B. ANALYSIS
Group Activity- each group will be given pictures of volcanoes and
illustrate what are the signs of an impending volcanic eruption with the use
of the picture. Each group will present their answers to the class.
Identify the signs of impending volcanic eruption using the given pictures. Choose your
answer from the box below and answer the guide question that follow.

Increased steaming activity; change in color of steam emission from white to gray due to
entrained ash.
Crater glow to presence of magma at or near the crater.
Ground swell (or inflation), the ground tilt and ground fissuring due to magma intrusion.
Localized landslides, rockfalls, and landslides from the summit area which are not attributable
to heavy rains.
Increase in the temperature of hot springs, wells and crater lake near the volcano.
C. ABSTRACTION
Key Concepts
• Magma that flows or erupts onto Earth's surface is called lava. Nearly all magmas contain gases.
It is a mixture of minerals and contains a small amount of dissolved gases such as water vapor,
carbon dioxide, and sulfur. Gas gives magmas their explosive character because the volume of gas
expands as pressure is reduced. The high temperature and pressure under Earth's crust keep
magma in its fluid state.
• Carbon dioxide and water vapor are the most important gases in lava.
• The amount of dissolved gases in the magma affect its viscosity. When gases begin to escape
from the magma, the effect of gas bubbles on the bulk viscosity is variable. The growing gas
bubbles will exhibit low viscosity and the viscosity of the residual liquid will increase as gas
escapes.
• Volcanic eruption is often associated with positive and negative effects.
o Negative effects
▪ It can cause loss of lives and properties
▪ As the lava flows or pyroclastic materials are ejected in the air, they can
destroy anything in their way.
o Positive effects
▪ Aerosol particles from volcanic eruptions helps in decreasing Earth’s surface
temperature.
▪ Some eruptions create spectacular scenery in its wake and produced very rich
soils for farming.
▪ People also became creative by making earthenware out of the ashfall from
volcanic eruptions.
• Despite the advantages that people get from volcanic eruption, the major concern now is how to
reduce the negative effects of disasters to reduce loss and save lives.
1. Increase in the frequency of volcanic quakes with rumbling sounds; occurrence of volcanic
tremors.
2. Increased steaming activity; change in color of steam emission from white to gray due to
entrained ash.
3. Crater glow to presence of magma at or near the crater.
4. Ground swell (or inflation), the ground tilt and ground fissuring due to magma intrusion.
5. Localized landslides, rockfalls, and landslides from the summit area which are not attributable
to heavy rains.
6. Noticeable increase in the extent of drying up of vegetation around the volcano’s upper
slopes.
7. Increase in the temperature of hot springs, wells (e.g. Bulusan and Kanlaon) and crater lake
(e.g. Taal) near the volcano.
8. Noticeable variation in the chemical content of springs, crater lakes within the vicinity of the
volcano.
9. Drying up of springs/wells around the volcano.
10. Development of new thermal areas and/or reactivation of old ones (appearance of solfataras).
D. APPLICATION
Fill in the table below of some positive or negative effects of volcanic eruption and answer
the guide question.
Agriculture
Tourism
Among the positive effects of volcanic eruption listed above, which do you think has the
biggest impact to humans? Why?

IV-VALUING
Relate how volcanoes affect the society. Why is it necessary for us to know the positive and
negative effects of volcanic eruptions?
V-EVALUATION
DIRECTION: Choose the best letter of your answer.
1. Which of the following is the negative effect of a volcanic eruption?
a. Some eruptions create spectacular scenery in its wake and produced very rich soils
for farming.
b. It can cause loss of lives and properties
c. People also became creative by making earthenware out of the ashfall from
volcanic eruptions.
d. Aerosol particles from volcanic eruptions helps in decreasing Earth’s surface
temperature
2. Which of the following is the positive effect of a volcanic eruption?
a. Increase in the frequency of volcanic quakes with rumbling sounds; occurrence of
volcanic tremors.

c. People also became creative by making earthenware out of the ashfall from
volcanic eruptions.
d. As the lava flows or pyroclastic materials are ejected in the air, they can destroy
anything in their way.
3. It is one of the signs of impending volcanic eruption.

4. After the eruption of the volcano, what would be the positive effects on our
agriculture?
a. Lava and ash deposited during an eruption breaks down to provide valuable
nutrients for the soil
b. Lahars and lava flows can destroy settlements and clear areas of woodland and
agriculture with its fast flowing and temperatures over 400°C.
c. People can make a living out of creating earthenware
d. Lahars and lava flows can destroy settlements
5. Why is it important for people, especially those who live near a volcano, to be
familiar with the signs of an upcoming volcanic eruption?
a. Because it has the biggest impact to humans because its effect is for a long term
benefit.
b. To be familiar with the signs of an upcoming eruption, can be used to anticipate
and warn communities beforehand. It also allows sufficient time for affected
communities to implement response plans and mitigation measures
c. To evacuate immediately if its needed
d. To be prepared in time of volcanic eruption
