Oman Across Ages Museum

Nizwa, Oman

Appointed directly by Oman’s Royal Court Affairs following an international competition, Event has
been the central force in the conception and delivery of a new national museum to celebrate Oman’s
history and people and the country’s remarkable renaissance under the leadership His Majesty the Late
Sultan Qaboos.
Since 2014 Event has worked with a select group of the late Sultan’s personal advisors to create a
museum - geared specifically to the younger generation - designed to bring the country’s story to life.
Having completed a masterplan for the new museum, Event managed an international architectural
competition that secured the services of Australian Architects, Cox. Working with Cox – from the inside
out – it has been possible to craft a set of museum spaces that don’t simply provide accommodation for
museum objects and installations, but are integral to the visitor experience as platforms, sets and stages
for a wholly immersive museum journey.
Blending traditional museum disciples with techniques from theatre and film-making, it has been
possible to create a unique and absorbing experience. The imaginative combination of media, technology
and objects - all set within the dramatic, large-scale spaces of the new museum - enables visitors to
journey to the Oman of their forebears and appreciate how the tradition and skills of yesterday continue
to shape and inform modern living.
Across 9,000 sqm of gallery space, the museum explores seven principal periods through the lenses of
religion, social life, politics, external relations, trade, economics, creativity and culture, enabling visitors
to chart change and continuity through time. It sets out in detail the movement of peoples from Africa,
from the first farmers to today. In the Renaissance gallery, covering the last 50 years of the Sultanate,
dynamic installations chart the country’s recent progress during the reign of Sultan Qaboos and offer a
window on Oman’s future.
The objects on display will range from pre-historic tools, through Iron Age artefacts relating to Oman’s
trade in frankincense and the domestication of the camel, to objects from the pre-Modern era, including
Islamic manuscripts, coins, ceremonial and domestic metalware. More recent artefacts include vehicles
used by His Majesty on his meet-the-people tours along with other products from the broadcast and
media age, testifying to Oman’s enthusiastic adoption of contemporary communications. Where
relevant, replicas are large in scale such as The Magan Boat, a Bronze-Age reed vessel that ploughed
the coastal waters around Oman. All the objects – authentic or replica – will be set within impressive,
subject-sensitive displays designed to be completely intuitive to explore.
Over the last six years – working from a local office - Event’s interpretive design team has immersed
itself in the rich history and culture of the country to produce a museum that is sensitive and engaging,
powerful and moving and, above all, closely connected to the personality and emotion of the country
and its people. Fabrication and installation of all exhibits is now underway, with Event taking the role of
engineer’s representative to oversee the quality of all exhibition works during execution.

The Museum aims to provide a memorable journey through the creation of a nation that remains a
pivotal point within the political geography of international relations. Born of the very earth of Oman,
its galleries will express a story of human endeavour and achievement to inspire Omanis and visitors
alike.

Due to complete in 2020 to mark the Late Sultan’s fiftieth year in power and a half century of the
renaissance, the museum is now set to open in May 2021
