Ki-pat, watching over his herd of cows, saw an eagle drop a feather, giving him the idea to make a bow and arrow. He shot an arrow at a large grey cloud over the plain, causing a storm with thunder, lightning and rain. The rain turned the grass green again, allowing the animals to return to the Kapiti Plain with food and water once more.

    This is the Kapiti Plain, all fresh and green
    from the African rains.
    One year, it stopped raining.

    The grass turned brown, and the animals had to leave so that they could find food
    and water somewhere else.

    A big grey cloud was above the Kapiti Plain, but it still did not rain.
    Touch the cloud to hear it rumble.
    The cows on the Kapiti Plain were hungry.
    They asked the sky to rain by saying "moo! moo! moo!"
    Touch the cow to hear it moo.
    This is Ki-pat who watches his herd while standing on one leg like a big stork
    bird.

    A herd is a big group of


    cows.
    An eagle flew over Ki-pat and his herd of cows. It dropped a
    feather.
    The feather gave Ki-pat an idea.
    He decided to use the feather to make a bow and arrow.

    Ki-pat pointed his bow and arrow to the big grey cloud and BOOM!

    It began to storm. Thunder, lightning and rain all came down on the Kapiti
    Plain!
    Hooray! The grass began to turn green again. The cows were happy because they
    had food again. All the animals began to return to the Kapiti Plain.

    Can you name the different animals that returned to the Kapiti
    Plain?
    Ki-pat is still looking after his herd of cows with his wife and his child. He knows just
    what to do to make sure that it rains on the Kapiti Plain.
