How to identify
information needs
INFORMATION NEEDS
refer to what an individual recognizes as needs regarding
information, whether personal or professional, that will serve
as basis for decision-making in order to survive
Criteria in checking the
sources of information
AUTHENTICITY | VALIDITY | RELIABILITY
Authenticity
refers to the information’s originality or legitimacy,
whether it is a material with an author and there is a way
to check its origin such as domain name and links that are not
broken in the case of the Internets
Validity
may include accuracy and precision of information
presented such that it is more factual, less biased, and
error-free
Reliability
may pertain to relevance of information, whether it is up-
to-date and credible

Challenges in media &
information
OPPORTUNITIES
• Through the mass media, people gain information about
issues, events, people, products, and places, which help in
improving the personal, professional, and social lives.

• Television provides different programs that cater to a


specific audience with distinct tastes, needs, and
preferences.

• Educational programs let people understand scientific


breakthroughs, biology, physics, mathematics, literature,
among others.
OPPORTUNITIES
• Variety and games shows, soap operas, and reality TV
programs entertain people.

• Advertisements show information about products or services


in the market that can be availed.

• Access to computers, the Internet, multimedia, social media,


and mobiles phones allow to surf, connect with friends and
relatives, play games, watch movies, and listen to music
almost instantaneously.
CHALLENGES
• Telenovelas adapted from some parts of the West and Asia
may erode Filipino cultural values and perpetuate
dependence on foreign programs.

• Children are getting exposed to things that they may not be


able to understand, which are part of Filipino myth and
folklore but when left unexplained may affect their cognitive
and emotional development.

• Most advertisements drive to consumerism, particularly


those endorsed by celebrities, which may reinforce
materialistic attitudes when exposed repeatedly.

• The use of social media, mobile phones, and the Internet


may also lead to some challenges such as online
harassments and threats.
Media & information as
change agents
Things to ponder:
• Media and information are critical to our participation in
democratic processes.

• Our society is dependent on media and information in


order to grow and develop.

• Information is power.
