Kahles invented the riflescope as we know it today. In fact, we produced our first riflescope in 1898.
But that’s only the beginning of a story steeped in an ongoing history of innovation and a dedication
to ultimate optic performance.

Kahles’ roots actually date back to 1823, when Simon Ploessl revolutionized optical performance through his
development of the first color-correcting lens system, known as the Achromatic Ocular. Karl Robert Kahles
took over operation of Ploessl’s Optical Workshop in 1898 and the Kahles Company was born. It didn’t take
long for Karl to introduce the legendary Telorar riflescope, the first practical design of its kind. The technical
innovations continued as Kahles later became the first optical manufacturer to produce a waterproof
riflescope by utilizing O-rings for sealing the erector tube. Kahles’ heritage of crafting unparalleled,
precision ground Austrian optics made it the first scope manufacturer to use multi-coating on all
air-to-glass lense surfaces. This patented AMV coating increased light transmission to 99.7% (per air to
glass surface), a standard that no other manufacturer has been able to beat to this day.

Today, our lenses are still ground in our original plant in Vienna, Austria. Our designers, opticians,
engineers, coating specialists and quality control professionals live and work by the same standards of
unfailing performance originally envisioned by Karl Robert himself. Kahles continues to blaze new
trails in riflescope design, durability and performance with such products as our American Hunter series
of riflescopes, the unique TDS Tri-Factor Reticle System and our new Turkey Reticle.
