Part B: Reacting acid with a carbonate

Method: See p201

Result: Describe what happened

Question

1. Calcium carbonate + Hydrochloric acid = Carbon dioxide

2. It doesn’t fly out of the test tube like the hydrogen did hence it is heavier and it can
blow out flame

3. It does not support burning

4. There is a chemical reaction happening, it makes limewater milky.

Conclusion

Carbon dioxide was a lot heavier, carbon dioxide stayed in the test tube for a long period of
time whilst the hydrogen gas escaped quickly.
