SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND ABSORPTION OF COARSE AGGREGATE (ASTM C127)

Testing objectives:

The specific gravity and absorption of coarse aggregate test aims to determine the quality of
coarse material and its water absorption.

Scope:

This test method is limited only for a coarse aggregate and it is not intended to be used in
lightweight aggregates. It also observes the proper procedure on how to conduct with respect to
ASTM C127.

Apparatus Required:

1. Sieve No. 4 (opening size of 4.75mm)

2. Container/Mold
3. Water
4. Trowel
5. Clean Dry Towel/Mat
6. Metal Tray
7. Flask Basket
8. Brush
9. Laboratory Hot-Air Oven
10. Weighing scale with clamp tared
11. Digital Weighing Scale (10kg. capacity-sensitive to the extent of 0.1% of total sample)

Safety and Precautions:

1. Use hand gloves, safety shoes & apron at the time of test;
2. Properly brush sieve no. 4 and flask basket so that no soil particles were stuck in them
before and after using it;
3. To avoid machine in harmful particle, always clean the laboratory hot-air oven before and
after using it;
4. Make sure that the flask basket is properly tared under the weighing scale;
5. After test switch off the apparatus; and
6. Before conducting the test, make sure that no one is around (1-meter radius from testing
machine)
Test Procedure:

The following procedure was adopted in ensuring that the data to be record from specific
gravity and absorption of coarse aggregate test specimens was taken in an organized and consistent
manner.

1. Prepare at least 70kg of aggregates (when picking sample, take a strip at least 3 meters);
2. Place the 70kg specimen into the container full of water and let it soak for about 24 hours;
3. Make sure to clean sieve no. 4 using brush before using so that no any particle is stuck in the
opening of sieve;
4. After 24 hours of soaking, randomly take at least 10kg of specimen and pour it in the sieve
no. 4 and shake it until fine aggregate separate from the specimen;
5. After sieving, place the retained specimen/coarse aggregate into the metal tray;
6. Put the coarse aggregate by portion into the towel and rub it until it attains its saturated
surface dry (SSD) condition (observe the surface of the aggregate, aggregate is in ssd
condition when no water exist on its surface);
7. Weigh the container to be use were the specimen be placed and mark it as W1 in the table
2.0;
8. Place the SSD coarse aggregate into the container and cover the top of container using the
wet towel;
9. Continue doing it until the SSD coarse aggregate reach at least 5kg;
10. After reaching it, take the container with SSD coarse specimen and weigh it in digital
weighing scale. Mark it as W2 in the table 2.0;
11. Set-up the flask basket under the second weighing scale. Make sure that the flask basket is
empty when it is tare while submerge in water;
12. After setting up, take the flask basket and gently pour the SSD coarse aggregate specimen
into it. Make sure that no aggregate is lose/drop around to avoid errors.
13. Carefully lift the filled basket and attach it under weighing scale (submerged in water);
14. Make sure that all particle of specimen inside the basket are under the water surface;
15. Record the weight of the SSD coarse aggregate under water;
16. After reading and recording data, take out the coarse aggregate from the basket and place
them on the metal tray (spread into entire space of metal tray);
17. Place the metal tray filled with coarse aggregate into the laboratory hot-air oven at a
constant temperature of 110ºC ±5ºC for at least 24 hours;
18. After 24 hours, take out the metal tray from the laboratory hot-air oven and let it be cool at
the room temperature.
19. When the specimen is cool, place the coarse aggregate into the container;
20. Weigh the container with coarse aggregate specimen and record the data.
21. Determine the specific gravity (apparent), bulk specific gravity and water absorption of
coarse aggregate.
Tabulation of Data:

Table 2.0 and 2.1 are example data gathered from the result of Specific gravity and water
absorption test. The type of aggregate used in the test are those in commercial wherein the
characteristic are those or similar with the ASTM specification sets.

To determine the “water absorption” you’ll need to know the weight of aggregate in OD and
SSD condition. To get the “specific gravity” you’ll be using the weight of aggregate in OD condition
and “weight of basket filled of aggregate under water surface.” On the other hand, if you want to
arrive to “Bulk Specific Gravity”, weight aggregate in SSD condition, weight of basket filled of
aggregate under water surface and weight aggregate in OD condition are to the one to considered.
Calculation, respectively are stated below the table (see page 38).
