“The manager’s most basic responsibility is to focus people toward performance of work

activities to achieve desired outcomes.” What’s your interpretation of this statement? Do you
agree with it? Why or why not?

Ans: This statement can be interpreted as, a manager’s most important job priority is to
concentrate on his subordinates and make sure that they complete their work as planned. Yes,
I profoundly agreed with this statement and the reasons are: This statement means
that the most fundamental responsibility of managers is to lead people to achieve
the organization's goals. Managers also play the role of a bridge between top
management and lower management. Organizations exist to achieve some
particular purpose, and someone must define that purpose and the means for its
achievement. Managers are that someone. As managers engage in planning, they
set goals, establish strategies for achieving those goals, and develop plans to
integrate and coordinate activities. Managers are also responsible for arranging
and structuring work to accomplish the organization's goals. When managers
organize, they determine what tasks are to be done, who is to do them, how the
tasks are grouped, who reports to whom, and where decisions are to be made.
Every organization has people, and a manager's job is to work with and through
people to accomplish goals. To ensure that goals are being met and that work is
being done as it should be, managers must monitor and evaluate performance.
Actual performance must be compared with the set goals. If those goals are not
being achieved, the manager's job is to get work back on.

However, it is more accurate to describe a manager's responsibility as a leader

with excellent communication skills, problem-solving ability, and efficiency that
keeps a department organized and running smoothly. Therefore, we may say “ The
manager’s most basic responsibility is to focus people toward the performance of work
activities to achieve desired outcomes.”
Explain the universality of management concept. Does it still hold true in today’s world? Why or
why not?

Ans: Management is the art of making irrevocable decisions based on insufficient information.
Universality refers to the applicability of specified management techniques to all situations.
Management principles are needed for the efficient and effective operation of organizations,
regardless of the level of the manager or the industry in which they operate. This is true for
today’s organizations now more than ever. The global environment of today ensures that
organizations will face staunch competition. Failure and weakness on the part of management
ultimately lead to loss of market share and organizational closure. Also, gone are the days when
managers could ‘bluff’ their way through their dealings with employees who have become more
demanding and aware of their legal rights.
