Learners Activity Sheet on Probability of Simple Events

Many events can’t be predicted with total certainty. The best we can say is how likely they are to
happen, using the idea of probability.

PROBABILITY
- Is the measurement of the likelihood of an event to happen.

When a coin is tossed, there are two possible outcomes: a head (H) or a tail (T)
We say that the probability of the coin landing H is ½ or 50%
And the probability of the coin landing T is ½ of 50%

When a single die is thrown, there are six possible outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

We say that the probability of any one o them is 1/6

In general:
Number of ways it can happen
Probability of en event happening=
Total number of outcomes

Example 1.
There are 5 marbles in a bag: 4 are blue, and 1 is red. What is the probability that a blue
marble gets picked?
Solution:
Number of ways it can happen: 4 (since there are 4 blue marbles)
4
Total number of outcomes: 5 (since there are 5 marbles in total) So the probability= =0.8
5

Example 2:
If one letter is chosen at a random from the word TRUSTWORTHY, what is the probability
that the letter chosen is a vowel?
Solution:
Number of ways it can happen: 2 (U and O are the vowels)
Total number of outcomes: 11 (total number of letters)
2
So the probability= =0.18
