2. Use the shortcut method to find the following products.

a. If there are 5831 boxes and each box holds 244 plums, how many
plums are there in all?
Solution:

Number of boxes = 5831

Number of plums in one box = 244 plums

Total number of plums in 5831 boxes = 5831 x 244


= 14,22,764 plums
b. Dragon fruits are usually imported from Vietnam and Thailand to
India. But now our Indian farmers have started to cultivate them. The
fruits are sold at Rs.175 per Kg. How much money can a farmer make
if he harvests 4535 Kg of dragon fruits.

Solution:

Cost of 1Kg dragon fruit = Rs. 175

Total cost of 4535 Kg fruits = Rs. 175 x 4535


= Rs. 7,93,625
c. The apples of an orchard are packed in cartons for exported. If 42
apples can be packed in carton, how many cartons are required to
pack 31206 apples?

Solution:

Number of apples packed in a carton = 42

Number of cartons required to pack = 31206 / 42


= 743
d. A double decker bus can accommodate 82 people. How many
double decker buses are required for 87084 people ?

Solution:

Number of people accommodated in a bus = 82

Number of buses required = 87084 / 82


= 1,062
e. What should be multiplied by 37 to get 81252 ?

Solution:

Required Number = 81252 / 37


= 2,196
f. Ramdheen sold 26102 samosas this month. On an average how
many samosas did Ramdheen sell every day in this month(31 days) ?

Solution:

Number of samosas sold = 26102

Number of samosas sold on


average each day = 26102 / 31
= 842
g. A school announced an educational trip. Any interested student has
to pay Rs.2075 for the trip. If 236 students have paid for the trip, how
much money is collected ?

Solution:

Amount spent for educational trip for a student = Rs. 2075

Total amount for 236 students = Rs. 2075 x 236


= Rs. 4,89,700

4. Solve the word problems
a. Suresh and Sruthi gifted a necklace to their mother on Mother’s
Day.If Suresh paid Rs. 74,336 and Sruthi paid Rs. 38,413 for the
necklace, what was the cost of the necklace ?
Solution:

Money paid by Suresh = Rs. 74,336

Money paid by Sruthi = Rs. 38,413

Total money spent for the necklace = Rs. 74, 336 +


Rs. 38,413 = Rs.1,12,749
b. A vendor bought 50200 mangoes for sales. Of the total number of
mangoes, 2630 were rotten and were thrown away. He sold 33726 of
the remaining. How many mangoes were left with him?
Solution:

Total number of mangoes vendor bought = 50,200


Number of mangoes rotten = 2,630
Number of mangoes fit for selling = 50, 200 – 2,630
= 47,570
Number of mangoes sold = 33,726
Number of mangoes left with = 47, 570 – 33,726
the vendor = 13,844
c. The first three winners of a quiz competition receive cash prizes. The
first runner up gets Rs. 34, 567 and the second runner up gets Rs.
19,533. the winner receives Rs. 46,234 more than the second runner
up. How much more did the winner get than the first runner up ?
Solution:
Cash prize received by first runner up = Rs. 34,567
Cash prize received by second runner up = Rs. 19,533
Cash prize received by winner = Rs. 19,533 +
Rs.46,234
= Rs. 65,767
Amount got by the winner than the first runner up
= Rs. 65,767 - Rs. 34,567 = Rs. 31,200
d. How much should be taken away from fifteen million to make it
fifteen thousand ?

Solution:

The required number = 15,000,000 – 15,000


= 14,985,000
e. What is the result when fifty thousand thirteen is increased by
fifteen thousand ?

Solution:
The required number = 50,013 + 15,000
= 65,013
