PAPER – III : ADVANCED COMPOSITE MATERIALS

Contact Hours: 3 Hours/Week Continuous Assessment: 30 Marks

Total Contact Hours : 48 Hours Course End Examination: 70 Marks

1. Introduction to Composites:
Difference between Natural fiber and manmade fiber, necessity for developing
composite materials, characteristics of composite materials, classification of
composite materials, choosing materials for the matrix, choosing materials for 10 Hrs
the reinforcement, properties of composite, advantages and disadvantages of
composite materials.

2. Fiber Reinforced plastic processing:


composite manufacturing process, hand layup process, spray layup, filament
welding, composite molding, sheet molding compound process, bulk molding
compound, thick molding compound, bag molding pultrusion, bag molding
pulforming, resin transfer molding liquid molding process, vacuum assisted

resin transfer molding, seeman composite resign transfer molding process,
vacuum bag molding, vacuum infusion process, pressure bag molding, thermo
forming ( thermoplastic forming), blow molding, centrifugal casting.

3. Fabrication of Composites:
Cutting cured Composites, drilling of Composites, water jet cutting, abrasive
water jet machining of Composites, laser cutting, adhesive and mechanical
joining of Composites, machining of Composites, Composites hierarchy. 10 Hrs

4. Application of Composites:
Automotive application, marine application, electrical and electronics

application, sports application, space application, composite piping systems.

5. Metal Matrix Composites:


Monolithic metal v/s MMC’s reinforcements, matrix materials and key compos
nets, characteristics and design considerations, fabrication methods, need for
production of MMC’s selection procedure of MMC’s applications.

6. Fabrication Process f MMC:


Fabrication types, powder metallurgy technique or route for preparation of
composites, extrusion, metal infiltration technique, squeeze casting ( liquid
metal forging ), spray co-depositions, Fabrication methods and need for 6Hrs
production of MMC’s selection procedure of MMC’s applications.
7. Properties of Metal Matrix Composites:
Density, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), Specific heat, electrical
resistivity, physical properties, mechanical properties, effect of size shape and
distribution of particulate on properties.
8. Introduction to smart Materials, Nanomaterials, and Shape memory
Alloys:
History and Application SMA, smart materials and nanomaterial’s
Scheme : Answer any five full questions & each questions carries equal marks.
