Liz Spetz Step Away From the Rain Barrel

297-8804
It was a surprise to me to discover that in several US states, including Colorado,
Utah and Washington, it is illegal to collect rainwater on your own property,
(although restrictions have been relaxed in some areas). The laws denying you the
use of water that falls on your house and land have been on the books for some time
but have not been enforced. Recent droughts have changed this. Now you can own
a rain barrel but you are not allowed to use it without a water use permit; this is so
even though rain barrel usage doesn’t have much of an impact on droughts.
Further, in these states you are not permitted the re-use of gray water (bath or laun-

dry water) for watering plants or gardens. The rights to water are legally allocated
to the state and they charge you for use of tap water by each independent use. No
free rides. No getting around the meter on the tap. This is about economics and in-

more and more. Stripped of the right to your own water you’re reduced to paying a
lot of money for the ability to extract food production from the land and, in return,
are allowed to keep only a limited share of the profits.

Water is arguably the world’s most important commodity and we control vast quan-

issue never really dies away because our neighbour to the south is a big and poorly
managed consumer. Canada sits on 6.5% of the world`s renewable fresh water,

Writings of a prairie girl

Jack’s Café
Seems as there was a time when writing came easier. Like when I sat on the beach
NEW HOURS at Lessard Lake and wrote as the forest fire smoke veiled the sun, or on a blanket in
the courtyard of the U of S in the middle of an autumn day while students walked
Monday—Friday to and from classes. Knowing not a soul, I poured my heart out onto pages meant
6:00 am - 8:30 pm for a dream at the time. Still thankful that that particular dream never came to be,
but longing for those hours of almost nothingness. Only the distraction of wild
emotions and superficial relationships interrupted my abilities to write.
Saturday & Sunday Now the desire has grown and matured as my heart is moved by the sun, water,
9:00 am - 8:30 pm and soaring birds of prey. My prayers being more that of a lover, with more truth,
tears, and experiencing most everything with all five senses.
Come in I do believe that girl I was so long ago will teach me more about myself as I learn
to love her. Her movements, expressions, even the way she loved from what she
thought was a whole heart. May I walk with her in those memories I once promised
to forget.
