1. A Pipe of 200mm internal diameter and 50mm thickness carries a fluid at a pressure of 10MN/m2.
Calculate the maximum and minimum intensities of circumferential stresses across the section.
OR
2. A compound cylinder, formed by shrinking one tube to another is subjected to an internal pressure of
90MN/m2.Before the fluid is admitted, the internal and external diameter of the compound cylinder are
180mm and 300mm respectively and the diameter at the junction is 2400mm.If after shrinking on , the
radial pressure at the common surface is 12MN/m2,Determine the final stresses developed in the
compound cylinder.
3. Develop the equation for equivalent length of the column for which one is fixed and other end hinged
using Euler’s theory.
OR
4. Simplify the equation for secant formula for column subjected to eccentric loading.
5. Simplify the equation for expression for Rankine’s Hypothesis for strut/ column.

6. Determine the ratio of buckling strengths of two columns on hollow and solid. Both are made up of
same material and have the same length, cross sectional area and end conditions. The internal dia. of
hollow column is 2/3rd of its external diameter.
7. A simply supported beam of span 3.6m carries a load of 600N at its center. The section of beam is an
equal angle of size 120 X 120 X 15mm. The load line is passes through the centroid ‘G’ of the section
vertically. Determine stresses at extreme corner points of mid section of beam. Find also the position of
neutral axis.

8. Evaluate the maximum tensile stress in the I-section of simply supported beam of span 3m which
carries a load of 10 KN at the center of the beam. The load line is inclined at an angle of 300 with the
horizontal and passes through the centroid of section. Dimensions of I-section: Flanges 100 X 20mm
and web 180 X 12mm.
9. A 80mm *80mm*10mm angle section is used as a simply supported beam over a span of 2.4m.It
carries a load of 400N along the line Yg where G is the centroid of the section .Evaluate (i) stresses
at the point A,B and C of the mid section of the beam. (ii) Deflection of the beam at the mid section
and its direction with the load line. (iii)Position of the neutral axis. Take E= 200GN/m2.

10. A Beam of T- section (flange: 100mm*20mm: Web:150mm*10mm) is 2.5meters in length and is
simply supported at the ends. Its carries a load of 3.2Kn inclined at 20 degrees to the vertical and
passing through the centroid of the section. Find out the (i) Maximum Tensile stress (ii) Maximum
Compressive stress (iii) Deflection due to the load (iv) Position of the neutral axis.
