Development Goals (SDG)
● Eni has worked towards reducing hunger and increasing employment opportunities in
Nigeria through its Green River Project
● Total invested in developing solar energy and provided affordable and clean energy to
marginalized communities in Tanzania and Kenya
● 24 largest oil and gas corporations accounting for more than 30% of world’s
production are ready to make the low-carbon transition.
● European players in this sector have shown progress in achieving climate-related goals
● Majority of the Chinese companies have not even met half the minimum standards that
were set to tackle climate change.
Critical Analysis of Sustainability practices
Shell and BP have garnered remuneration as leaders of corporate citizenship across the world. Prominent
international CSR initiatives like Global compact and GRI have been spearheaded by them. They have also
ventured into renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions as they cause global warming but other firms appear
to have done less on this front.

Petrobras, Reliance and Indian Oil targeting international expansion and rely upon the international reputation
and international financial markets

Environmental reporting and practices in western multinationals tend to provide high quality data and follow
sophisticated reporting and environmental management systems- Petrobras, Shell , Reliance Total are such
companies

Oil companies are now making significant contributions towards community development schemes such as
hospitals, schools and micro-credit schemes.Among the commercial oil and gas companies, Petrobras was
reportedly the biggest spender (US $255 Mn) on “Social Investment”
Differences between CS Practices

● Chevron adopts a more general and comprehensive perspective in its practices addressing issues as specific as
waste water management, carbon footprint reduction and delivering sustainable solutions at the local and
hyperlocal levels.
● For Total, the strategy is a mix of global and local counterparts with slightly more focus on the former. The scale
at which Total operates at and the effect its practices have are greater in magnitude than that of Chevron;
although the specificity of the areas covered are more for the latter.
● Royal Dutch Shell aims at maintaining a striking balance between profitability and sustainability. With its
technology-oriented approach, the company aims to minimize the cost for sustainability in the future while
consistently increasing its scale.
● ONGC aims to incorporate a regional connect and due to its non-private nature, it has easier access to varied
resources and even greater transparency in the data reported.
● For Petrobras, the range of CS practices is not diversified to cover many niche purposes like Chevron but the
intensity of its existing practices such as water and marine pollution and educational causes is one of the highest
among the selected companies. It maintains a healthy equilibrium between social and environmental aspects of
sustainability.
