DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
104 | P a g e
Domestic violence is becoming a legacy being passed on from one generation to another.
It can be a male’s or female’s atrocities towards another male or female.
The contributing factors could be the desire to control another family member, to exploit
someone or to show supremacy.
One of the biggest reasons for it being so prevalent is the orthodox and idiotic mindset of
society.
In India more than 55% women suffer from domestic violence especially in the northern
states.
Working women are quite often subjected to domestic violence.
Domestic violence can only be vanished from the society by broadening our mind.
EUTHANASIA
105 | P a g e
Some opine it is apt and necessary in extreme conditions where others disagree with this
fact.
In Netherlands, Australia & England euthanasia is legal and allowed.
According to many people euthanasia should be legalized.
A terminally ill patient, who has no chance of recovery, must have the right to end up his
life.
So that, he needs not to endure the unbearable pain for the remaining years of life.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Human trafficking means trade of human beings and their body parts.
People run rackets in order to earn more money in a short time.
It is an international problem which has deep roots.
Not only the deprived and illiterate people are into it but also the highly educated
& highly designated ones are indulged in this evil activity.
The easy prey of human trafficking is the lass.
106 | P a g e
Consequently, the victim lost the charm of her life and her family suffers.
They lost their pride & honor and even face social and psychological problems.
People who are indulged into such activities have no emotions and principles.
Human trafficking is done by several means like, by threat or force, abduction,
fraud etcetera.
In order to root out the grave problem we should be aware and make others alert
because prevention is better than cure.
POVERTY (PENURY)
Poverty is a state of life where a person cannot fulfill his basic needs i.e. food, shelter and
clothing.
In India poverty is an issue to be resolved.
Poor people live in slums.
They are usually those who are illiterate and migrated to towns or big cities in search of
employment and better prospects of life.
High want levels are synonymous with poor quality of life, deprivation, malnutrition &
illiteracy.
Poverty alleviation has not given much importance so far in our planning.
Though we always thought that poverty can be removed through economic development.
107 | P a g e
These days, with the prodigious efforts of government and many NGOs there has been
sharp decline in penury over the last 5 years.
Still 26 crore people are living below poverty line (BPL) which is a very large number.
In order to eradicate this curse from the society we must take the bull by its horns and it
demands group efforts rather than individual.
OBESITY
108 | P a g e
To root out the problem one must be aware and make others aware about its ill effects.
Regular exercise & a balanced diet taken on time will lead us to a salutary and flourishing
life.
DEFORESTATION
The reckless cutting of trees & clearance of woodland to fulfill human needs is called
deforestation.
It has numerous adverse affects on humans and nature.
It is somewhere responsible for the life threatening problem “Global warming”.
Many of the animals and birds have lost their natural habitat just because of
deforestation.
Myriad species of animals and birds have extinct because of this selfish act of humans.
The supreme causes of deforestation are Agricultural activities, Logging, Urbanization,
and Desertification of land, Mining & forest blazes.
We must be aware of the consequences of deforestation & make others conversant with
it.
If we are cutting the trees we must plant more and more trees.
One must be responsible to save the mother earth in order to prevent the existence of life
on it.
109 | P a g e
Habitat : home, territory
110 | P a g e
Fatal : deadly, lethal, mortal
MIGRATION
The term migration refers to the movement of population from one place to another.
It may be of temporary or permanent.
Temporary migrations may be annual, seasonal or even of a shorter duration like daily.
Commutation is a term used for daily movement of people between & its surrounding
towns or villages.
The purpose of migration may be employment, business, education, family movement,
marriage, calamity etcetera.
Majority of these migrants are illiterate or semi-illiterate & unskilled peasants and
laborers who are compelled to leave their home town/ country due to poverty or
unemployment.
Since, the migrants have little skill or training, they are mostly absorbed in low-grade
processing activities, indigenous transport, petty trade or low-grade services.
Greatest proportion of them is illiterate or semi-literate & is compelled to take up still
lower kinds of jobs as domestic maid servant, hawkers or vendors.
This leads to have certain problems like increase in road traffic, pollution,
unemployment, crime, discrimination and scarcity of resources in that particular area.
Government must put efforts to curb this menace as it must provide the amenities in
villages as well so that people need not to migrate to towns or cities.
Thus, the balance will be maintained.
111 | P a g e
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
Capital punishment is the infliction by due legal process of death as the punishment for
crime.
“Capital punishment” is also known as “death penalty”
One who violates that fundamental human right deserves to get the most extreme
punishment that can avenge for his actions.
Some crimes like rape, murder etcetera can force the law to charge them with death
penalty.
These criminals are often being executed not for the crimes they have committed, but for
the discrimination & prejudice directed against them.
Capital punishment these days is given in few cases.
As, some people believe that they commit such kind of illegal activities because of some
circumstances.
The culprits must be given chance like education & training as it is well said that that “to
err is human”. So, all human beings must be given chance to rectify their mistake.
However, others believe that victim will not get justice.
Last but not the least; capital punishment must be given on the type of crime a person has
committed.
Infliction :
Violates : disobey, go against, breach
Avenge : retaliate, take revenge, punish
Executed : put to death, killed
Culprits : offenders, guilty
112 | P a g e
GLOBAL WARMING
JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
113 | P a g e
It is an act of committing crime by a youngster who is not yet adult & a person who
commits crime is known as juvenile delinquent.
There are several causes of this prevailing problem like peer pressure, lack of proper
counseling, more demands of children than the earnings of their parents’ etcetera.
One of the biggest reasons is working parents where both the parents are busy earning
money & there is lack of parental care and guidance.
To boost this among the children influence of media cannot be denied.
Teenagers have innocent minds as they can’t differentiate between right & wrong
Adolescents usually follow their role models & want to live life like them. So,
somewhere their parents and celebrities have a great influence on them.
The panacea of this problem is great care of children until they become cautious enough
to differentiate what is advantageous and what is perilous for their future.
Proper counseling must be given to them & parents must keep an eye on their children’s
movements.
Parents must spend quality time with their children to reduce communication gap so that
children can talk to them freely.
DOWRY SYSTEM
114 | P a g e
But, these days the ravenous people made it a means to accomplish their materialistic
desires.
Though anti-dowry bill has been passed in the parliament, it is not yet practically
implemented.
Sometimes young brides commit suicide for the torture.
This may be one of the possible indirect causes of female feticide due to which the poor
parents are fretful to give birth to a girl child.
One of the solutions can be that the women commission should find out such causes &
punish those greedy guardians.
Education is the biggest tool for bringing awareness among the populace.
Today’s men should take the initiative to stop this curse by not buoying up their parents
demands.
DRUG PADDLING
115 | P a g e
The most common prey of this curse is the youth including girls.
All over India Punjab has the highest proportion of drug addicts who are just grownups.
Smuggling & marketing of drugs in any region raise a question on the aptitude of
government of that territory that how it crossed the threshold even in their surveillance.
Drug paddling has adverse effects not only on the consumer & his family but also on the
provider.
The government and authorities must be heedful to stop this evil enter in our territory
also those who breach the law must be penalized firmly.
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Greenhouse effect is the gradual warming of the air surrounding the earth as a result of
heat being trapped by the environmental pollution.
It is caused due to destruction & cutting down of tropical rainforest.
It is also caused due to the vehicles that clog up city streets because of rapid growth of
population.
The consumption of many commercial products such as washing powder, washing-up-
liquid causes the greenhouse effect.
The outcomes of greenhouse effect are a threat to human existence & to the plants &
animals, as cyclones & floods are sudden & fatal in their wild rage.
116 | P a g e
It is also predicted that the temperature may have risen by as much as 4o C.
It may also reduce the making’s ability to grow food, severely damages wildlife.
As we all know prevention is better than cure, so it is a time to take necessary steps to
prevent from effects as people should be encouraged to plant trees more instead of cutting
down.
Mills, factories, brick fields should be set up in a planned way.
Vehicles should be brought under control so that they might not produce sound & emit
thick black smoke.
For our voice we need to add a strong voice to international advocacy for emission &
control of greenhouse gases.
Tropical : hot, humid
UNEMPLOYMENT
117 | P a g e
Joblessness leads to many of the unethical activities such as stealing, snatching,
abduction etcetera.
Many of the times, a person who does not get job faces depression & indulges in bad
activities like drug addiction, smoking etcetera.
To resolve this crisis government should try to generate job opportunities.
By controlling population & migration we can overcome the menace of
unemployment from the society.
By the prodigious efforts of government & individuals the problem prevailing in the
society can be cured.
PEER PRESSURE
118 | P a g e
As, everything in this world have some positive as well as negative effects so it is up to
us that how we eliminate the cons and enjoy the pros of “Peer Pressure”.
ROTE LEARNING
Rote learning is a modern technique based on repetition of topics; basically it is a way to
cram academic lessons without attaining proper knowledge.
This technique has developed in our country because of much theoretical subjects.
Some of the alternatives of rote learning include meaningful learning & active learning.
The two biggest examples of rote learning are alphabets & numbers.
It is an ineffective tool in mastering any complex subject at an advanced level.
It is very helpful where quick memorization is required. E.g. memorizing a telephone
number.
It is also needed where verbatim recall of definitions or numbers is required.
It is the only way to learn certain things like irregular verbs & vocabulary for foreign
language.
This practice does have certain shortcomings, as people who are into rote learning, their
mind cannot generate ideas of their own.
Omission of any word, letter or step may make the whole presentation wrong.
119 | P a g e
After completion of formal studies a student cannot perform efficiently in the practical
life.
HONOR KILLING
It is the murder of a member of a family or asocial group by other members due to the
belief of wider community that the victim has brought dishonor upon the family or
community.
There are several causes for this inhuman act like dressing in a manner unaccepted to the
family or community.
In case of inter caste marriages this action is seen more recurrently.
It is different from dowry deaths that are also very common practice in India.
Honor killing can be generally seen in the northern region of India like Punjab, Haryana
and Rajasthan.
Mostly, the people involved in it are either uneducated or highly regarded who has an
orthodox outlook.
In many of the cases the authorities are also associated with them and help them to escape
from the matter very easily.
So as to eradicate this problem the mentality of people has to change.
120 | P a g e
Laws should be strictly implemented so that no one can breach them
Awareness among such people should be created.
FEMALE FETICIDE
Female feticide is the illegal practice of killing a fetus in its mother’s womb which is
determined as a female.
It has been six long decades since India got independence but many Indians are still
trapped in age-old traditional beliefs
“Old-beliefs” means the mindset of people who still find themselves in the trap of girl-
boy inequality.
Female feticide is still prevalent in Indian society; it has been a practice for hundreds of
years.
One of the factors of female feticide is that the daughters are considered to be an
economic liability because of the evil “Dowry System”.
Sons are called upon to provide the income; they are the ones who do most of the work in
fields.
Sons are looked to as a type of insurance.
With the advent of technology ultrasound techniques has gained widespread popularity in
India.
It resulted in the fetal sex determination & sex selective abortion by medical
professionals.
There are many laws regulated to stop this evil practice but all in vain.
By strengthening the laws we can curb this problem.
Must aware the people by highlighting the achievements of girls.
121 | P a g e
Woman empowerment should be done by educating them, raising the age of marriage.
The medical colleges & professional bodies should abide by the laws made by the
government. They should take strict action towards the staff involved in this evil practice.
122 | P a g e
