Seed Germination
Research Question: -

How does different amount of water affect the seed germination?

Purpose: -

The main idea behind performing this experiment is to discover that

how does the different amount of water affects the seed germination. By
performing this experiment, I contemplate that I will approach towards learning
more about the concept of seed germination and going deeper in order to gain
more specific information about the particular topic.

Hypothesis: -

The seed which is watered with a medium amount of water will grow
much faster than compared to others.

Background Information:-

Germination is a biological process by which an organism grows from a

seed or any other similar structure. It is the process of seeds developing into
new and fresh plants. Certain amounts of factors are required in order to execute
the germination process effectively. If we look scientifically the seeds will
remain sedentary if they are not grown in presence of oxygen, sunlight and
especially water, these products are required in order to grow any specific seed.
It is also scientifically suggested that in order to develop a seed adequate
amount of water will be most suitable for the process as water deficiency will
result in slow process and the embryo will also not develop. Plants do need
water but too much amount of water can rot the seeds before they actually grow,
if the soil gets too much water it will fill in the air spaces in the soil which will
result in not breathing of the seeds and getting stressed.

Apparatus/Materials/Equipments:-

 25 Chana Kaboli Seeds.

 250 ml water.
 5 Containers (each 9 cm long) (plastic disposable glasses)
 Measuring Cylinder
 Black + Red Soil
 5 Sticky Notes (for labeling)
 1 Pasteur Pipettes (dropper)
 1 tray (keeping the plants)

Procedure/ Methodology: - (Chronological Order)

1. Take 25 seeds all should be of the same type.

2. Take 5 containers each should be 9 cm long.
3. Label all the plants 1,2,3,4 and 5.
4. Label all the plants 15ml, 20ml, 25ml, 30ml and 35 ml.
5. Take some soil and fill half the soil in the 1st glass which is 15 ml.
6. Take some soil and fill half the soil in the 2nd glass which is 20 ml.
7. Take some soil and fill half the soil in the 3rd glass which is 25 ml.
8. Take some soil and fill half the soil in the 4th glass which is 30 ml.
9. Take some soil and fill half the soil in the 5th glass which is 35 ml.
10. Put all the five seeds in the 1st glass which is 15 ml.
11.Repeat the procedure no. 10 for more 4 times with different glasses
and water quantity.

12. Measure 15 ml of water with measuring cylinder and pour it in the 1st
glass.
13. Repeat the procedure no.12 for more 4 times with different glasses
and different water quantity.
14. The next day with the help of Pasteur Pipette pour few droplets of
water in each plan.
15. Repeat the above step for a certain amount of days.
16. Observe the plants every day and try to take the recordings.

Analysis:-

The above graph shows the No of days taken by the seeds to germinate
(brown) and the seed number which is present in the blue color it also shows the
number of days taken by the seed to germinate with respective amount of water.
This graph helps in interpreting the number of days taken by the seeds to grow
in respect with the amount of water. The graph is very closely fitted in order to
provide readings for each and every seeds. If we look at the graph for the first
instance the graph won’t be clear but if you interpret it for 1 min and look
closely the graph will be clear, as there are very close numerical values you can
determine the values by simply pointing your cursor at any specific reading
which will provide you the exact amount. The graph is not constant as the

readings have different variations sometimes it is increasing or sometimes it is

at the same level. The graph if closely analyzed it is evident that seeds watered
with 35 ml is growing faster than the other seeds.

Evaluation

Validity of the method:

The method designed and followed by me was reliable to a greater

extent. The dependable method helped me throughout my entire experiment as
the method gave me sufficient and specific information about the experiment
and how to execute it the right way. The other factor which strengths my
method is the well-prepared Methodology and safety precautions as by clearly
mentioning and stating them it helps me to follow it and perform it accordingly
and perform it accordingly will be quite beneficial for me. Besides this there
were some errors in the experiment. One of the errors can be related to the
amount of soil. As in my experiment I did not accurately measure the amount of
soil in each glass, although I know that the soil quantity was almost equal but all
of them didn’t have the same amount of soil there were some minor differences
in each of the glasses. This shows that the more soil will absorb more water and
hence it can create a minor difference in the readings. The other possible error
could be receiving the equal or adequate amount of sunlight. As the plant is in
contact with sunlight but we can completely rely on the fact that every plant will
receive the same amount of sunlight or whether during some point of time it
will receive sunlight or not and this can also contribute in making a difference
in the recordings.

Improvements: -

 Sunlight is an essential factor which can help the plant to grow efficiently
without any challenges. As we are not sure that whether every plant will
receive the same amount of sunlight or not. We can hence provide 1 lamp
for each of the plants and keep the plant under the lamp so that everyone
will receive the same of light.
 The equal amount of soil was not present in each of the glasses there were
some minor differences which can affect the readings. I can make sure
that each of the plant have some amount of soil by measuring the weight
of the soil and the soil’s weight should be equal for every plant so that it
does not impact on the recordings.

Conclusion: -

The main purpose of the experiment was to explore that how can different
amount of water affects the germination of the seed. The seeds which were to be
tested were the same but amount of water that was supposed to be poured in the
seeds were different. Looking at the final result of the experiment the seeds
which were watered with the highest amount of water which is 35 ml (plant 5)
germinated much faster than compared to the other ones. With this my
hypothesis is proved wrong as my hypothesis was the seeds watered with
medium amount of water will grow much faster than the others ones but at the
end of the experiment the seeds watered with most amount of water actually
grew much faster.
