Introduction
Pottery dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization, the Vedic era, and the Mughal period.
Pottery is well-known in most Asian countries and is steadily expanding across the world.
Handmade ceramics in various colours, such as bowls, utensils, and vessels, are in high
demand. India's pottery has developed into beautiful ceramic art over the years. The sector
hires a substantial number of workers from both rural and urban areas. India exports pottery
to more than 140 countries. India exported pottery worth $9.97 million in the 2019-20 fiscal
year. In India, capital investment in the pottery industry is poor. Artisans can work at any
time of year and make crafts in their spare time. The sector receives income from both
domestic and foreign markets. Since the pottery is mass-produced, the artisans are free to
work full-time. Working at home helps women to contribute actively to the family income.
They are able to balance their household duties and use them effectively. This sector is
categorized as a small-scale or household industry, and it is even referred to as a women's
trade. It has assisted young entrepreneurs in their attempts to raise themselves out of poverty.
The Indian government has been a strong supporter of small businesses, launching a number
of initiatives and policies to safeguard their financial and social interests. These programs
support businesses from all walks of life. Ambedkar hasthashilp Vikas Yojana, Study &
Growth, Mega Cluster Initiative, and others are some of the proposals under the National
Handicrafts Development Program. Under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Scheme, MSMEs will
get free collateral loans.
The proposed project would provide a source of income for women in rural Gujarat. It plans
to open a pottery business and generate revenue through professional growth, work
opportunities, and access to local and foreign markets. The project would result in the
creation of a research, manufacturing, and training facility for pottery artisans, as well as the
trial production of products using cutting-edge technology. A well-equipped commercial
Centre will also be able to find future domestic and overseas markets. This will be a
demonstration project, with the possibility of expanding the activity to include broader
educational, training, and product scopes in the future.
Target Market
Many consumer purchase cheaper pottery items that are mass produced. But there are some
who appreciate the time and precision put into the work and are willing to pay more for it.The
market target will be the city café and restaurants, streets side stalls, malls, and on a long-
term perspective the Indian Railways Food Delivery Services.
