quilted canvas works in Tate’s collection by the Filipino artist Pacita Abad (see also Bacongo III 1986,
Tate T15298, and Bacongo IV 1986, Tate T15299). They are part of a series that Abad began in the late
1970s. Referring to them as trapuntos, from the Italian word for embroidery or quilt, these works are
the artist’s responses to the cultural traditions that she encountered during her travels in Asia, Africa
and Latin America, although they also refer to vernacular traditions of sewing – a traditional part of
family education in the Philippines.

b. What materials are used in the artwork? What are the dominant colors?

*They were made using large pieces of canvas onto which the artist stitched forms, creating a three-
dimensional effect by stuffing the canvases and transforming their surface with paint, shells, buttons,
beads, mirrors and other objects collected on her travels. Their decorated surfaces integrate a range of
patterning techniques to create semi-figurative forms with what look like large eyes set in stylised,
mask-like faces.

c. How do the size of the repeated elements vary?

*Abad dispensed with stretcher bars and hung these works directly on the wall or from the ceiling and
this, combined with the distinctive technique, transformed the relatively flat surface of a picture into
something more multi-dimensional. The portability of the trapunto form can be said to resonate with
the peripatetic aspect of a migrant existence as experienced by the artist, being an object that can
theoretically be rolled up and more easily transported than a stretched painting.

more coats or transparent coating of varnish.

placed over an object or an image.

*Montage-is used for photography or film where a pictorial image is juxtaposed or placed
overlapping to make another picture or design.

*Trapunto-painting is the technique used by Pacita Abad where her canvases are padded,

sewn, and often filled with sequins, beads, shells, buttons, tiny mirrors, bits of glass,

rickrack, swatches of precious textiles, and other things that she picks up from her

travels and journeys.

*Digital-Digital applications for art viewing is another technique.

2. How are interactive and collaborative art done by contemporary artists?

quilted canvas works in Tate’s collection by the Filipino artist Pacita Abad (see also Bacongo III 1986,
Tate T15298, and Bacongo IV 1986, Tate T15299).

The portability of the trapunto form can be said to resonate with
the peripatetic aspect of a migrant existence as experienced by the artist, being an object that can
theoretically be rolled up and more easily transported than a stretched painting.

overlapping to make another picture or design.

travels and journeys.

Pacita Abad

European Mask

1990

a. Describe the artwork. What is the subject matter of the artwork?*This is one of a group of three
quilted canvas works in Tate’s collection by the Filipino artist Pacita Abad (see also Bacongo III 1986,
Tate T15298, and Bacongo IV 1986, Tate T15299).

The portability of the trapunto form can be said to resonate with
the peripatetic aspect of a migrant existence as experienced by the artist, being an object that can
theoretically be rolled up and more easily transported than a stretched painting.

reversal of that image onto canvas or other flat materials.

*Decoupage-is done by adhering cut-outs of paper and then coating these with one or

more coats or transparent coating of varnish.

*Frottage-is the technique of rubbing with crayon on a piece of paper which has been

placed over an object or an image.
