III. Procedures

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activity

1. Prayer
 May we all stand for the prayer.  A student lead the prayer
Who can lead the prayer?
2. Greetings
 Good morning class?  Good morning Sir!
 You may now take your seats.  Thank you ma’am.
3. Checking of Attendance
 Let me check the attendance first.  Check attendance using a seat
Make sure that you are in your proper plan.
seats so that you will not be marked
absent.
 Very good! Everybody is present
4. Checking of Assignment
 Yesterday I gave you an assignment.
Let’s see if you worked it. May I have
your worked?
 Let’s check if your answers are
correct.
5. Review
 Write your answer on the board.
(call 3 or 5 students to work on the
board) (3 or 5 students to answer on the
board)
 Let’s analyze the electric
configuration.
 1) 2 Energy Level
 How many energy level are there in 2) 3 E.L
1)Ne10 – 1 s22 s22 p6 3) 3 E.L
4) 4 E.L
2)Mg12 – 1 s22 s22 p63 s2 5) 4 E.L
3)S16 – 1 s22 s22 p63 s23 p4
4)Mn25 – 1 s22 s22 p63 s23 p64 s23d 5  1) 2 s22 p6
5)Br35 –1 s22 s22 p63 s23 p64 s23d 104 p5 2) 2 s2
 Which is the outermost energy level 3) 3 s23 p4
or the electron found in the 4) 4 s23d 5
outermost energy level?
5) 4 s23d 104 p5
B. Lesson Proper

1. Presentation of the Lesson

 What do you call this outermost

energy level/found in the outermost  Valence Electron

 What then is then is the valence 1)Ne10 – 1 s22 s22 p6

box them. 3)S16 – 1 s22 s22 p63 s23 p4
4)Mn25 1 s22 s22 p63 s23 p64 s23d 5
 Valence electrons give us information
5)Br35 –1 s22 s22 p63 s23 p64 s23d 104 p5
about elements in the periodic table.
 A periodic table has 2 parts
- period
- family
 What is a Period or which is the Period?
How many period does a periodic table  Consist of the horizontal rows in
have? the periodic table
 (7) Horizontal rows
 How about Family or Group?
Which is the Family?  Elements with similar
characteristics are found in
 How many family are there in the vertical columns.
periodic table?  (18) Vertical columns.
 Using the valence, let’s see what
information it gives us.

e- = F/G
2 s22 p6 Family/Group
Period
P=2
F = 8A

 S.P – Subshells
- it tells where electron are found –
exact location of electron
 How about Mg? In what period and
Family does it belong?
Correct. Very Good!  Period – 2 Family – 2A

More Example:
O 8 - 1 s22 s22 p4
N 7 - 1 s22 s22 p3  Period – 2 Family – VIA
Cl 17 - 1 s22 s22 p63 s23 p5 Period – 3 Family – VA
Period – 3 Family – VIIA
 You must bear in mind that if an
elements is found/ or ends is S and P
subshells – it is a Representative
.
Elements (Family A)
 How about Silicon? It has a valence
of 3 s23 p4  Period – 3 Family – VIA
 How about CO 27?
What period and family does it  CO 27-1 s22 s22 p63 s23 p64 s23d 7
belong? Period – 4 Family – 9B
 Why B? because it ends in subshell
–d Transistion elements
 Cl 17 - 1 s 2 s22 p63 s23 p5
2

What period & family does it belong?  Period – 4 Family – IIIA

Why A? 3 s23 p5Because it ends in S & P
subshells that is Representative
2. Application Elements.
Activity 1:
Using the given valence electron
identify and paste the elements in the
families where they belong.
Ex:
Mg 12
Mg 12 – 1 s22 s22 p63 s2
3 s2

Period – 3 Family – IIA

(After performing this activity, the (somebody from other groups will ask
students present their work at the the reporter)
board and explain)

 May I request all groups to paste

their work on the board.

 Anybody who was a question to the

group?

 Ok Very good class!

 We continue our discussion….

Representative elements –
elements belonging to A families

Group/Family

IA – Alkali metals (most reactive

elements) – it has only 1 electron in
the outermost energy level
IIA – alkaline earth metals
IIIA – boron group
IVA – carbon group
IVA – nitrogen group
IVA – oxygen group (chalcogens)
VIIA – halogens
8or O – noble gas (Inert Gases)
-stable/no longer reacts

IA to VIIA – the farther is the

distance of the electron from the
nucleus the less is its attraction.
 Yes, sir
Transition metals – the d-block elements  No sir
Inner Transition metals – the f-block
Elements
- they are elements belonging to B families

 Did you understand our lesson

today?
 Do you have some question,
clarifications, or any reaction to our
lesson?

IV. Evaluation
On a ½ sheet of paper
Direction: Identify the valence electron and determine the period and family of
element.

1. Alkali metals
2. alkaline earth metals
3. boron group
4. carbon group
5. nitrogen group
6. oxygen group (chalcogens)
7. halogens
