Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education

Spring 2021 (Online)

General Information:
Instructor: John Tashima
Email: [email protected]
Phone: 714-241-5759
Office hours: by appointment
Class dates: 1/25/21 to 3/21/21 (8 weeks)

Course Description:
This class will help you reach your educational goals by building upon your knowledge
of grammar, parts of speech, and vocabulary. We will review grammar rules and practice
writing sentences and paragraphs that clearly convey your ideas. We will practice
reading challenging texts and writing about what we read. My goal is for you to leave
this class confident in your skills and ready to succeed.

Course Objectives:
o Students will identify and produce proper grammar, mechanics, and format in
sentences and letters.
o Students will classify four different types of sentences.

Student Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Write sentences with a minimal number of local and global errors
• Write a letter that clearly conveys an idea and requests action be taken
• Correctly use sentences to convey information, ask questions, request action, and
express feelings.

Class Format:
This class will be conducted online using the “asynchronous” format. This means that
there are no scheduled class meetings; instead, students are expected to log on a few
times a week to learn concepts, practice, and complete assignments. Our class uses the
Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and you can access it here: class link. To
log in, you will need the WebAdvisor ID and password that you received when you
enrolled.

If you’ve never taken an online class before, don’t worry! You will receive plenty of
help from me and your classmates over the next few weeks. Aside from the instructional
activities, you will be posting weekly to the class discussion board where you will
participate in activities with your classmates. If you have questions, you can post to our
class questions discussion board where you will receive an answer from me or one of

1
your peers. Finally, you can always make an appointment to speak with me online via
video chat.

Time Commitment/Attendance:
The class runs for eight weeks. There is one “module” for each week of class. The class
requires a commitment of approximately nine hours a week. There will be assignments
due every Friday and Sunday; however, during the week you can do the work when it is
convenient for you as there are no live class meetings. Because this class serves students
with a wide range of experience, there will be optional assignments for those who would
like the extra practice, which can take up to an additional twelve hours a week. Again,
these assignments are optional, just for extra practice, and are not graded.

If you begin to fall behind in class, please contact me as soon as possible for a non-
judgmental discussion of your options and the best path forward.

Grading:
Letter grade scale:
A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 59% or below

This class is graded on a point system, which breaks down like this:

Unit quizzes 25%

Discussion board 20%
Writing assignment 25%
Final exam 30%

Each of these is explained in more detail below:

Unit quizzes:
Each week, you will work on one module consisting of several activities and
“practice quizzes.” You must complete all activities and pass each practice quiz
with a score of 70% or above to qualify for the unit quiz. Each unit quiz will
cover the materials from one module. Once the unit quiz is taken, the score is
recorded, and the student is ready for the next module.

Discussion board:
There will be a discussion board assignment due every Friday. This assignment
requires you to post a multi-sentence response to a writing prompt. Then, by
Sunday, you need to read a few of your classmates’ posts and post a reply to at
least two of them. The topics are quite varied but focus on helping you grow as a
writer. Here is a link to the first discussion board in case you want to take a look.

Writing assignments:
You will also be assigned a writing assignment every week. This assignment will
be evaluated based on one of the following rubrics.

Final exam:
The last week of class you will have time to study for the final exam. The final
exam covers all the material from the unit quizzes.

In Canvas, you can access your grades by looking at “Grades” in the Navigation bar.

Required Equipment:
No textbooks are required for this course. All learning materials and assessments will be
provided.

It is best to access Canvas on a computer or tablet (such as an iPad). You can also use a
smartphone, but these smaller devices might make it difficult to do some of the activities.
There are Canvas apps available on Windows, iOS (Apple), and Android. If you use a
web browser, we recommend an up-to-date version of Firefox or Chrome. We also
recommend running this Computer Readiness Test. More information on required
equipment is available here. Of course, it is also important to have internet access,
broadband, if possible.

A webcam and microphone are useful if you would like to make an appointment for
virtual office hours. Our school has a technology support page and a general student
support page that you can visit.

I will provide documents in multiple formats, including .pdf. To read .pdf files, you will
need Adobe software, available for free.

Academic Honesty:
It is important to read and understand the Santa Ana College Academic Honesty Policy.
Any student caught cheating or helping another student cheat will receive a zero for the
assignment or exam. Students who are caught cheating a second time will be reported to
the Dean of Student Development. Please don’t cheat! If you have any questions about
this policy, please let me know immediately.

Accommodations for Disabilities:

Santa Ana College is committed to providing an equitable environment for all students.
If you have a disability that may impact your ability to succeed in this course, please let
me know as soon as possible. Also, please contact Disabled Student Programs and
Services (DSPS) so that you receive the accommodations you need. The phone number
for DSPS is 714-564-6295.
