TIER 1 Wrestling (est. 2021)
THE IDAHO 24 MAKES HISTORY AT FARGO
Who or what is the IDAHO 24? To sum it up, prior to July 23, 2021, the IDAHO 24 did not exist.
At the conclusion of competition on July 23rd, the IDAHO 24 took on a new meaning, for it is the
total number of All-American honors (24) produced by eighteen wrestlers from the Gem State
at USA Nationals held at the Fargo Dome in North Dakota. In fact, it’s a new state record for
Idaho, far exceeding the previous top count. Traveling to Fargo with the largest contingent ever
(109 total – all divisions), Team Idaho proved to the nation that a small state with a population
of approximately 1.9 million can compete against the top tier states in the country. From the
starting point of Zane Jones becoming Idaho’s first All-American in 1980 (5th – Junior Greco),
the Gem State averaged approximately 2 All-Americans per year for the remainder of the
decade. During the 1990s, the average increased to 4 and more than doubled to 9 in the first
decade of the new millennium (Note – Women’s division began contributing to the All-
American count in 2008). Then from 2010 and beyond the number increased to approximately
13 with the sum total of All-Americans reaching 292 at the conclusion of this year’s event.
Furthermore, prior to the 2021 Fargo National Championships, the record for the total number
of All-Americans produced by Team Idaho (All divisions) at a single championship was 15. This
was accomplished in 2010, 2012, and 2013. Breaking the state’s record by an additional 9 All-
Americans did not happen by accident. It was a culmination of the hard work and commitment
by wrestlers, coaches, parents, and supporters coupled by the leadership of Chris Owens and
his “Blue Print For Action” that he has applied since joining the Team Idaho Staff back in the
mid-1990s and more recently in his leadership position as the Idaho USA Director (since 2017).
Owens’ efforts were recognized at this year’s competition when he was named USA Wrestling
National Youth Development Coach for Greco-Roman wrestling. Well Deserved!

Now let’s taking a closer look at Team Idaho’s 2021 performance. The 16U Freestyle and Greco-
Roman team had a very productive week. In Freestyle, the Gem State produced 3 All-Americans
(last accomplished in 2017) and 7 in Greco-Roman, which broke the state’s record of 6
(established in 2010 and duplicated in 2013 and 2019). Furthermore, the combined total of 10
All-Americans in both styles also broke Idaho’s record of 9 (established in 2013) and a fourth

place finish in Greco-Roman is Idaho’s highest finish ever for the 16U division, matching the
Junior Greco team performance in 2006. Individually, the leader for the 16U is Blackfoot’s Mack
Mauger. Only a sophomore, Mauger has established himself among the nation’s elite by
becoming Idaho’s first Double National Champion (both FS/GR) and also winning the Triple
Crown Series (FS, GR, and Folkstyle titles) in the same season. Moreover, Mauger is the first
16U to win a freestyle national title since Hayden Tuma won it in 2011. Also joining Mauger in
the championship finals was incoming freshman, Matthew Martino of Bishop Kelly High School
(younger brother of 5x All-American, Christopher) and Eagle’s Tanner Frothinger, who each
came up short in the finals to place runner-up. Rounding out the remainder of All-Americans
include Jason Mara (Meridian HS), Dedrick Navarro (Nampa HS), Cade White (Meridian HS),
Jaxton Packer (South Fremont), Treygen Morin (Ridgeview HS/Suples WC), and Hudson Rogers
of Gooding High School.

16U HIGHLIGHTS
▪ Mack Mauger – first Idaho wrestler to win a Double National Championship
(FS/GR), Triple Crown Winner, and 16U title since Boe Rushton in 1996
▪ 7 All-Americans in GR (broke record of 6 established in 2010)
▪ 10 All-Americans total in both styles (broke record of 9 established in 2013)
▪ 3 All-Americans in FS (last in 2017)
▪ Team Idaho places 4th in GR (Highest finish ever in 16U division). Tie’s record
established by Idaho Juniors (GR) in 2006

The Junior contingent faired just as well as the 16U by producing 3 All-Americans in freestyle
(last accomplished in 2012) and 7 in Greco-Roman, which is a new Idaho state record for a
single championship (the 2006 JR Greco team produced 6 All-Americans). The leader among
this talented group is American Falls’ Kolton Burton, winning the 100 pound weight group with
a pin in the first round of the final. He also doubled his All-American honor by placing 5th in
freestyle. Furthermore, Burton competed in each style of the 16U and Junior divisions, a feat
rarely attempted. A veteran to the Fargo Championships is Bishop Kelly’s Christopher Martino.
A senior in 2022, Martino entered the championships with four past All-American honors and
capped it off with another placing 6th in Greco-Roman. Earning a fifth All-American honor
places Martino among a small elite group of Idaho wrestlers to have earned 5 or more honors.

Edition 1.6 The Idaho Elite Report July 2021

They included Ridge Lovett (10), Hyden Tuma (7), Shawn Jones (7), Clayton Foster (6), Adam
Hall (6), Kirk Smith (5), Jared Lawrence (5), Brock Zollinger (5), and Josh Strait (5). Also earning
double All-American honors for the Gem State, Declo’s Derek Matthews added to his All-
American honor in 2019 by placing 8th in freestyle and 3rd in Greco-Roman. Winning three State
titles for New Plymouth High School, Kyle Rice earned his second All-American honor since 2019
by placing 8th in Greco-Roman. Other Junior All-Americans (FS/GR) include Tucker Bowen (Soda
Springs HS), Tristan Bremer (Lewiston HS), Dante Roggio (Kuna HS), and Aden Attao (Borah HS)
competing for Suples Wrestling Club. Overall, a great showing by the Juniors.

JUNOR HIGHLIGHTS
▪ Kolton Burton (American Falls HS) earns Double All-American honors and
National title
▪ Christopher Martino (Bishop Kelly HS) earned his fifth All-American honor
▪ Derek Matthews (Declo HS) earned his third All-American honor
▪ Kyle Rice (New Plymouth HS) earned his second All-American honor
▪ 7 All-Americans in GR (broke record of 6 established in 2006)

The level of wrestling in the women’s division is improving each year in the state of Idaho, both
at the youth and high school levels. Prior to the 2021 Fargo Nationals, Team Idaho had
produced at total of 21 All-American honors in the 16U and Junior Freestyle divisions
(Annaliese De Aragon was Idaho’s first All-American in 2008). Among the positive leading
indicators is for the first time, the Idaho women’s divisions (16U/JR) have produced a total of
4 All-Americans in the same year (broke the record of 3 established in 2015 and duplicated the
following year). The only returning Fargo All-American was Caldwell’s Marissa Jimenez (Suples
WC), placing 6th in the 16U in 2019. Prior to Fargo, Jimenez earned All-American honors at the
Cadet and NHSCA Nationals, as well as earning a Gold Medal at the Pan American Games. At
Fargo, she faced some tough competition and battled for a spot in the All-American round
placing 7th in the Junior division. Joining Jimenez on the medal stand is Coeur d’ Alene’s Alyssa
Randles (6th), also an All-American at the Cadet Nationals. An incoming freshman in the
Lewiston area, Joely Slyter placed 7th in the 16U division at 94s. Keep an eye on Rocky
Mountain’s Mia Furman (Suples WC). Only a Junior, Furman has been competing across the

Edition 1.6 The Idaho Elite Report July 2021

country in several national level competitions, earning All-American honors at the Cadet
Nationals, the High School Showcase, and Beach Nationals. At Fargo, she battled to the 16U
semi-finals only to come up short of reaching the finals, finishing 6th in a highly competitive 132
pound weight group. Overall, a great showing for the women’s division and improving each
year.

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS (16U/JR)

• Marissa Jimenez earns second Fargo All-American honor (16U/JR)
• 2 placers in Women’s juniors (last in 2016)
• 2 placers in women’s 16U (last in 2015)
• First time the Idaho women’s division (16U/JR) has produced a total 4 All-
Americans in same year (broke record of 3 – held in 2015, ’16)

In summary, 2021 has proven to be a banner year for the Gem State. Sending the largest
contingent to date (109 total – all divisions) and coming home with 24 All-American honors far
exceeds the last decade’s average of 12 to 13 per year. Not only did Idaho perform well in each
division and style, several long standing records were broken in the team and individual
performances, such as Mack Mauger becoming the first Idahoan to win double national titles
(16U) and the 16U Greco-Roman contingent placing fourth in the team standings, the highest
finish ever. The hard work and commitment by many in Idaho to tap into the state’s full
potential is evident with the results of this year and the progressive improvement in the last
twenty years. Furthermore, Chris Owens, the Director for Idaho USA receiving the award at
Fargo for USA Wrestling National Youth Development Coach for Greco-Roman wrestling is well
deserved and a leading indicator for more to come. His commitment to bring the entire state
together on a national level is increasingly becoming the norm and his Blue Print for Action is
setting a tempo that has proven to tap into Idaho’s full potential as a state. Based on what I
have observed in Idaho thus far, the future looks bright for the Gem State. A job well done to
Team Idaho, the Idaho 24 for establishing a new state record of 24 All-American honors, and
to every coach, volunteer, and administrator that contributed to the success of Idaho USA
Wrestling. Great job…We’re One Idaho!
