Abstract
The effort of the Department of Education to ensure that the education must continue
despite COVID-19 pandemic has significant value in uplifting the morale of the learners putting them
on a pedestal of academic continuity and lifelong personal improvement. However, tests on the
effect of various learning modalities on the academic performance of the students and the school
operations has been questioned because no empirical studies have been done yet. Thus, this research
has been conducted.
Using quasi-experimental method, 4,698 pupils from different schools of Clusters VIII & IX
were purposively choses as respondents of the study who were grouped as treatment group or those
who prefer online and control group who were modular pupils. The teachers of the participating
schools also served as the respondents in identifying the effectiveness of blended learning to both the
pupils and the school operations.
The study made use of survey questionnaire which is divided into two parts: the first part is
the effectiveness of blended learning to students while the second part is the effectiveness to the
school operations.
The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, and t-test using SPSS.
Findings of the study revealed that in terms of significant difference in the pre-test and
posttest mean scores of treatment group or those who were exposed to blended learning, the
significant value of all schools in the subject area of Araling Panlipunan is lesser than 0.05 level of
significance which is interpreted as ‘There is statistically significant difference’. Meaning, the
implementation of blended learning to the concerned pupils has significant effect on both their
academic performance and the school operations. On the other hand, findings also revealed that in
terms of significant difference in the pre-test and posttest mean scores of control group or those who
were not exposed to blended learning, the sig value obtained by the seven participating schools in all
five subject areas is lesser than 0.05 level of significance which means that the implementation of
blended learning to the control group has significant effect on both their academic performance and
the school operations.
Finally, in terms of effectiveness of blended learning to both groups of respondents, findings
of the study revealed that teachers perceived the indicators as ‘effective’ which means that blended
learning was perceived as effective in both the students and the school operations.
In terms of action plan as the output of the study, some action plans derived by the study
include dissemination of the result of the study, orientation and capacitating of the teachers and
conduct of workshops/seminars.
The study on the other hand, reflected that blended learning has significant effect on both
online and modular types of pupils in all grade levels in all subject areas. It also has a significant
effect on the school operations.
