Unit 7.

Natural disaster
A. Reading Comprehension

Hurricanes
Hurricanes are strong tropical storms. In fact, they are the strongest storms
on earth. Hurricanes are violent, circling storms that bring heavy rain,
strong winds, and walls of water from the ocean called ‘storm surges’. The
center of the hurricane is a calm area called the “eye” of the storm. These
violent storm have different names in different parts of the world.

In the Atlantic Ocean, they are called hurricanes. In the north Pacific, they
are called typhoons. In the Indian Ocean and South Pacific, they are called
cyclones.

Hurricanes begin in the ocean in late summer or early fall. Hurricanes need
warm temperaturas and high humidity. As they develop, they begin to spin
in a circular pattern. Most hurricanes stay out in the ocean, but a few
continue to grow, becoming stronger as they travel toward land.

Weather forecasters follow storms as they develop and travel in the ocean.
When the wind speed of a storm reaches 74 mph, it is called a hurricane.
Each hurricane receives a name, given in alphabetical order. For example,
storm names for 2010 were Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, and so on.

Hurricanes travel slowly, so weather stations can give residents warnings

several days in advance. Hurricanes do not travel in a straight line, so
forecasters are not sure at first where a hurricane is going to hit. A
hurricane watch means that a hurricane may hit in 24 to 36 hours. It’s a
good idea to buy extra batteries, food and water and to fill your car with
gas. A hurricane warning is more definite. A hurricane will probably hit in
the next 24 hours. Prepare your property and house. You may need to
evacuate.

One of the worst hurricanes in U.S. history hit Galveston, Texas, in 1900.
On September 8, Galveston was a busy seaport of 40,000 residents. By
September 9, half the city was under water and 6,000 people were dead.
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was the most expensive hurricane. It flooded the

city of New Orleans, Louisiana. It caused more than 1,000 deaths and over
$80 billion dollars in damage. In both hurricanes, the wind was violent, but
the water caused more damage. The storm surge flooded city streets,
homes, stores, and buildings.
