2. Write out a complete Cayley table for D3. Is D3 Abelian?

D3 is a non- abelian or a noncommutative group because it is the smallest non- abelian

group which also goes by the name S3 .

a. X 3 =V ; ANSWER: V
b. X 3 =R90; ANSWER: R270
c. X 3 =R0; ANSWER: R0
d. X 2 =R0; ANSWER: R180 , H , V , D , D'
e. X 2 =H ; ANSWER: None
4. Describe in pictures or words the elements of D5 (symmetries of a regular
pentagon).

The element of D5 are:

R0 =Rotation of 0 °

R1=Rotate clockwise 72 ° F A=Reflect acrossline A

R2=Rotate clockwise 144 ° F B=Reflect across line B

R3=Rotate clockwise 216 ° F C =Reflect across line C

R4 =Rotate clockwise 288 ° F D =Reflect across line D

F E =Reflect across line E

5. For n ≥ 3, describe the elements of Dn. (Hint: You will need to consider two cases—n
even and n odd.) How many elements does D n have?
Dn has n notations of the form k(360 ° /n), where k= 0, . . . , n-1 . In addition, Dn has n
reflections. When n is odd, the axes of reflections are the lines from the vertices to the
midpoints of the opposite sides. When n is even, half of the axes of reflections are obtained
by joining opposite vertices; the other half, by joining midpoints of opposite sides.
