Quarter 2 Week 7
Logic

Activity #1: Truth Values

A. Directions: Consider the propositions u : “Roi works as a sales associate.”; v : “Nico has a
temporary position in the office.”; and w :”Roi and Nico are co-workers.” Express the
following propositions in symbols or in English sentence as the case may be. Construct a truth
table for each item. (Total: 20 points)

1. “Roi and Nico are co-workers, but if Nico has a temporary position in the office, then Roi
does not work as a sales associate.

2. w →(u ↔ v )

3. “Roi and Nico are co-workers if and only if either Roi works as a sales associate or Nico has
a temporary position in the office.

4. ( ( u ) ∨ ( v ) ) →( w)

B. Directions: In this activity we look at the Instagram world of four girls: Joylyn, Ailyn,
Reylaigen, and Angel. We summarize their Instagram dynamics – who follows who – in a
table such as the following.

A check in the cell of table means that the girl named at the beginning of the row follows on
Instagram the girl at the head of the column.

e.g. the table below shows that Reylaigen follows Ailyn on Instagram.
Joylyn Ailyn Reylaigen Angel
Joylyn
Ailyn
Reylaigen /
Angel

Make the following propositions true by checking the appropriate cell(s).

(a) Angel follows Reylaigen, but does not follow Joylyn.
(b) Either Ailyn follows Reylaigen, or Ailyn follows Angel.
(c) While Joylyn follows everyone that Ailyn follows, Joylyn does not follow
Angel.
(d) Reylaigen follows everyone who follows her.
(e) Nobody follows herself.

Note that there are several ways this can be done. Hence, there are more than one correct
set of checked cells for this activity. Nonetheless, provide only one (1). (Total: 10 pts)
Activity #2: Not a True and False

Directions: Determine whether the given is a valid argument or a fallacy. Name and show the
rule of inference which justifies its validity. Otherwise, state a counterexample or identify the
fallacy exhibited by the argument. (Total: 20 points)

1. It is below freezing now and raining now.

Therefore, it is below freezing now.

2. Either Randelle sings or dances with Karl.

Randelle sang with Karl.
Therefore, Randelle did not dance with Karl.

3. If Anna wins the singing competition, then she will land a recording contract with a famous
company. She landed a recording contract with a famous company. It follows that Anna
won the singing competition.

4. If it rains today, then 2 ×2=4. It rained today. Therefore, 2 ×2=4.

5. If Isaias sleeps early tonight, then he will wake-up early tomorrow. If he does not play with
his pet dog, then he will wake up early tomorrow. Therefore, if Isaias sleeps early tonight or
does not play with his pet dog, then he will wake up early tomorrow.
Activity #3: Convince Me

Directions: Provide a statement and make convincing argument for or against the statement.
Provide at least 3 supporting sentences to the statement and then rewrite your statement and
argument(s) in symbols. As much as possible, make your argument logically valid as if you need
to convince someone.

Example:

Statement: Everyone should study logic.

Argument for the statement: Logic is used in engineering, law, philosophy, computer
science, mathematics, and many other disciplines. Logic makes our electronic gadgets,
such as cellphones, work. Logic is fun and interesting. If logic is useful, fun and
interesting, then everyone should study it. Therefore, everyone should study logic.

Let
p :Logic is used in engineering, law, philosophy, computer, science, mathematics, and many
other disciplines.
q : Logic makes our electronic gadgets, such as cellphones, work.
r : Logic is fun and interesting.
s : Logic is useful.
t :Everyone should study logic.

Propositional form: ¿
Standard form: pq
r
( p ∧q ) → s
( s ∧r ) →t
------------------
∴t
