INTRODUCTION

Psychology is concerned with almost all aspects of our lives. That is


why, everyone is interested to know about psychology. But, there are many
misconceptions about psychology. Many people think that psychology deals
with treating mad people. Some others feel that psychologists can read your
mind just by looking at you or your face/forehead. They tend to equate
psychologists with astrologers, gemologists, numerologists, palmists or
graphologists, who claim to solve your problems of life and predict your
future.
You might have heard the terms ‘psychology’, ‘psychological’, ‘mental’
etc., but do you know what is the meaning of psychology and how did it
evolve? Is psychology a ‘science’ or ‘art’? What is science and what are its
characteristics? What is the subject matter of psychology? In this subject you
will find answer to these and many more such questions.

Introduction to Psychology has a wide coverage of theoretical and


empirical foundations of psychology. The theories, concepts, and empirical
information focuses more on human behavior – the reason behind the way
we think, feel, behave, and interact with other people that makes us unique
individuals. By studying this, you will be able to understand what psychology
is and what it is not.

Introduction
Psychology cares about every aspects of our lives. Therefore, everybody is
interested in psychology. Yet psychology have many mistaken belief. Psychology focuses
mainly on human behavior, which is the explanation for the way we think, feel, behave,
and communicate with other people that makes us special. In this chapter, it introduces
you to what is psychology and its origin and the possible careers of psychology.

1.1 What is Psychology?

Psychology focuses on studying human mind and behavior and how it applies to
various daily routine activities of human. Psychology seeks to define, understand, predict
and regulate actions and mental processes that is based from what can be seen,
observed, and experienced.
1.2 History of Psychology

The origin of psychology can be traced back in antiquity Greece where people
anchored their behavior on nature and the teachings of Buddha. Later on, many philosophers
came up and tries to understand the concept of psychology. It is Wilhelm Wundt and William
James who explained the concept of psychology as a distinct discipline of science.

1.3 Contemporary Psychology

There are different areas in psychology that is applicable to the different type of
problems. This will offer an insight into the main fields of study and practice of modern-
day psychologists.

1.4 Careers in Psychology

Academic careers in psychology fields typically require doctoral degrees. Yet,


there are variety of non-academic career opportunities for those with a psychology
master’s degree. While people with bachelor’s degree have more restricted career
choices related to psychology.
