 Foreword
Origami is a Japanese word, which means “paper folding”. It was first
practiced almost one thousand years ago at the Imperial Court in Japan,
where it was considered a fun and interesting way of passing the time.
Over the centuries, the skill of paper folding was passed down to the
ordinary people, who took it up with enthusiasm and made it into a folk art.

Today in Japan, origami is used as a teaching and learning tool. For a

number of years now, it has also been very popular worldwide.

You can make many things with origami, by folding a square sheet of paper
into different shapes. Folding the paper is lots of fun, but it’s also enjoyable
to use the things you’ve made in different ways. Origami creations can be
used for decorating, as toys, and as handy containers around the house.
They also make great gifts for friends and family.

This activity book will show you how to make a selection of different
origami pieces, which have been taught over generations in Japan. Some are
simple to make, and others are a little harder. Follow our directions
carefully and you’ll soon be enjoying the wonderful art of origami!

paper for origami from art and craft stores. Or why not try using different kinds of paper from
around your home, such as colorful gift wrap? When using other paper for origami, you need
to make sure that it will fold and hold a good crease.
