(a) Remove the lockwire, washers, spring washer, screen and filter from the controller housing.
(b) Wash the screen and washers in cleaning solvent (06-005, Table 301). Dry with shop air.
NOTE: Use care not to enlarge or damage the orifice in the housing. The proper operation of the
system is dependent on the size of the orifice.
(c) Make sure that the orifice in the controller housing is free of foreign material.
(d) Install a new filter element, screen, spring washer and washers. Secure with lockwire.
3. Outflow and Safety Valve (LJ-1 thru LJ-571, LJ-575 thru LJ-640; LW-1 thru LW-122 Without Kit 100-4004-3)
A. Cleaning
(1) Fluctuation of cabin pressure often indicates dirty outflow and safety valves. This may be ascertained in the following
manner:
(a) Working through the tail section access hole in the bottom of the fuselage, compress the valve bellows and
inspect the valve housing along the inner rim that the bellows contacts when in the extended position.
(b) If the inner rim of the housing is dirty or if the bellows assembly binds on the valve shaft during movement, the
valves may be disassembled and cleaned as follows.
1 Remove the valve from the airplane and mark the upper and lower housings of the valve with lines that
align.
2 Unsafety and remove the six screws securing the upper and lower housings of the valve together.
3 Remove the cotter key, nut and washer from the shaft in the bottom of the valve and separate the bellows
assembly from the valve housing.
4 Wash the valve housing's unpainted inner rim that the bellows contacts when in the extended position with
cleaning solvent (06-005, Table 301).
5 Wash the shaft on which the bellows assembly slides with cleaning solvent (06-005, Table 301) If any tarry
substance still adheres to the shaft, clean the shaft with crocus cloth, then wash again with cleaning solvent.
6 Center the spring in the upper housing and insert the shaft through the bellows assembly. Align the marks
on the valve housing and secure the upper and lower housing together with the six attaching screws. Lock
the screws in place with lockwire.
7 Install the washer and nut securing the bellows assembly on the shaft and insert the cotter key locking the
nut in place on the shaft.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the valve diaphragm, avoid rotating the metal on the bottom of
the bellows assembly during installation.
4. Outflow and Safety Valve (LJ-572 thru LJ-574, LJ-641 and After; LW-123 and After; and Airplanes With Kit 100-4004-
3)
A. Cleaning
(1) Fluctuation of cabin pressure often indicates dirty outflow and/or safety valve poppet and seat or safety valve filter.
The seats of the valves should be inspected and cleaned at the specified intervals or more frequently as needed (Ref.
Chapter 05). The inspection and cleaning of the valve poppet and seat may be accomplished by the following
suggested procedure:
CAUTION: Use only the product listed, as unapproved products may have a damaging effect on the
component parts of the valve or may leave a residue which will interfere with the valve action.
(a) Working through the tail section access opening in the bottom of the aft fuselage, inspect the valve poppet, seat
and noise suppression screen for accumulation of dust and tobacco smoke residue.
(b) Use a suitable liquid dispenser filled with Joy detergent and water or with isopropyl alcohol and flush the valve
poppet, seat and noise suppression screen. It may be necessary to remove the noise suppression screen and
wipe the poppet and seat with a clean rag dampened with Joy detergent and water or with isopropyl alcohol.
5. Safety Valve Filter
A. Cleaning
(1) The safety valve filter should be cleaned at the specified intervals (Ref. Chapter 05). The filter may be cleaned by the
following suggested procedure:
(a) Working inside of the cabin, remove the upholstered cover or grill, as required, to gain access to the safety
valve.
(b) Remove the filter from the safety valve.
(c) When the filter is cleaned regularly and is not subjected to severe residue deposits, the filter can be cleaned
without disassembling. It may be rinsed in cleaning solvent (06-005, Table 301) and dried with shop air. Make
sure that the orifice of the filter housing is free of foreign material. If the filter has not been cleaned regularly, or if
there is considerable residue deposit, the filter may be disassembled and cleaned in the following manner.
1 Remove the retaining ring from the filter assembly housing. Remove one screen the copper ribbon and the
remaining screen from the housing of the filter assembly.
CAUTION: Do not use solvent (06-005, Table 301) on the valve body. It can damage the valve body
material.
2 Wash both screens, the copper ribbon and the filter assembly housing in cleaning solvent (06-005, Table
301). Make sure that the orifice in the housing is free of foreign material.
CAUTION: Use care not to enlarge or damage the orifice in the filter housing. The proper operation of the
system is dependent on the size of the orifice.
(d) Install one screen in the housing of the filter assembly. Install the copper ribbon in the filter assembly housing. Do
not over-compress the ribbon. Install the remaining screen and the retaining ring.
(e) Install the filter assembly in the safety valve, using the packing removed with the filter assembly. Tighten to a
torque of 15 to 20 inch-pounds.
(f) Replace the upholstered cover or the grill.
