The Spiritual Self

The Spiritual Self
ACTIVITY 9
Watch the movie entitled “PK (Aamir Khan)” an Indian film and write you
reflection about the movie on your Journal.
It struck me. It was unexpected, but my perceived message of the film really left
me in awe. I never expected that a movie this bizarre, with little bits of dancing and
singing, would leave me thinking critically about my spiritual self.
The movie revolves around an alien who came from a planet similar to Earth, but
more advance and complex. He came to conduct research about the humans here on
Earth but instead was robbed of his remote which is his ticket back home. He then
experiences firsthand the daily acts and ways of people under different religions which
he even called company and having a religion, a label. He even went and started the
pursuit for God, as he deemed it missing after not finding him in temples, as people
always tell him that only God can help him in finding his remote. In the end, after
debunking a past prophecy given by a false messenger of God, he then retrieved his
remote and went back to his planet, leaving his love interest behind.
I cannot fully say that I have a well-developed spiritual self nor a spiritual self. I
am also not a great thinker who has everything figured out nor an individual with a mind
that can be compared with the excellent thinkers that history can offer. I am just an
ordinary man, trying to find my own way towards my spiritual self.
ASSESSMENT 9
Do you Have Your Umbrella?
Many people arrived at the church to pray for the needed rain. The pastor greeted most
of them as they filed in. As he walked to the front of the church to officially begin the
meeting, he noticed most people were chatting across the aisles and socializing with
friends. When he reached the front, his thoughts were on quieting the attendees and
starting the meeting. His eyes scanned the crowd as he asked for quiet. He noticed an
eleven-year-old girl sitting quietly in the front row. Her face was beaming with
excitement. Next to her, open and ready for use, was a very colorful and extremely
large umbrella, much bigger than her in fact. The little girl's beauty and innocence made
the pastor smile as he realized how much faith she possessed. No one else in the
congregation had brought an umbrella. All came to pray for rain. But the little girl had
come expecting God.
Journal Writing:
What I have learned here in this story, is one of the learning I have discovered
throughout life. Most people relate their faith to the physical and material wealth they
receive. Some think that the harder you pray, the harder the downpour of blessings will
be. The thought of appeasing your spiritual needs fades away as some think that their
spiritual contentedness, lies within the resolve of their problems in life.
2. What is the lesson of the story “Do you have your Umbrella?” and how are you
going to apply it in your daily life?
The lesson for me is that it is okay to raise your worries and concerns to God, but
depending on your spiritual faith and belief in the material wealth you want to receive,
might as well be considered as a fake love. Pray to appease your spiritual hunger and
needs, not to appease your material desires.
