SYNOPSIS

ANIMAL SHELTER AND RESCUE CENTRE

ANIMAL SHELTER

An animal shelter can be a local pound (a public enclosure for stray or unlicensed
animals) and be government-owned but not all shelters are funded by tax-payer
money. Generally speaking, an animal shelter is a place where animals are
surrendered or brought in when their previous owners either cannot take care of
them anymore or if they are found on the streets.

ANIMAL RESCUE

An animal rescue is usually a private organization or a private endeavor which takes in

certain animals (mostly pet animals or companion animal only) from abusive homes
or homeless situations. What an animal rescue does is to provide the animal a
temporary home through a network of animal foster parents who agree to host the
animal until it is adopted. This is can be for the duration of rehabilitation if the animal
has health or behavior problems, or for the duration of treatment if the animal is ill or
in need of veterinary help.

An animal rescue can also be focused on one or two types of animals only. Some are
breed and age specific which is a good thing because this means that the people who
are fostering the animals really have a passion for the specific breed or age of animal
the rescue is focused on.

Generally speaking, animal rescues run on pure donation and goodwill of animal
lovers. It is very rare for an animal rescue to receive any help or funding from the
government.

AIM OF THE THESIS:-

My aim is to provide the state-of-art structure
which is able to address and tackle all the design related issues for the comfort and
rehabilitation of the animals brought in there.
NEED AND JUSTIFICATION:-
 There is a compelling challenge today to provide acceptable levels of animal
welfare in any nation that is no longer rural and agricultural but in which paradigm
shifting two centuries has transformed it to urbanized and technological.

 In modern society only 2% of an ever increasing population lives on farms and

only 1% practices farming as an occupation.

 The shocking number of animal cruelty cases reported every day is just the tip of
the iceberg in which most cases are never reported. The animals whose abuse is
most often reported are dogs, cats, horses and livestock. The most important
crimes are commercialization of rearing, artificial growtheners, organized abuse,
illegal trafficking, domestic violence etc.

 Habitat loss poses the greatest threat to species. The world's forests, swamps,
plains, lakes, and other habitats continue to disappear as they are harvested for
human consumption and cleared to make way for agriculture, housing, roads,
pipelines and the other hallmarks of industrial development.

 Loss of food for animals as consumption of animal based food products, medicine
and cosmetic products as increased.

 Pollution and climate change has played unhealthy role in extinction of domestic
animals.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION:-

 Separate spacious compartments in the shelter’s facility for housing animals so
that the visitors could have a chance to select available animals for adoption.

 More number of reception desks to shorter the Processing time for adoption.

 Making an easier way for visitors to interact with a future pet by providing a
meeting area or playroom for them to meet and be acquainted with an animal
he/she likes.

 More well equipped medical units to the animal’s minor health conditions.
 Would also provide deworming plus spaying facilities and neuter before letting
the animal be ready for adoption.

 To provide homely environment for animals where they can retain their social
ability and be accustomed to humans.

Limits:
Private shelters may have a lot of requirements and fees before letting to adopt or
take home a pet. For some people, a minimal fee can be a con despite the fee being
considerably cheaper than to bringing an intact pet to a vet for spaying and neutering.

Shelter animals are often not on their best behavior because a shelter can be a very
scary place for an animal who is not used to being in a confined space with other
animals. For this reason, visitor might miss up on a great pet just because the animal
is scared out of its wits when a visitor met it.

Meeting the future pet or scheduling visits can be a pain because the pet lives with a
foster who is a volunteer. This means that the foster cannot just leave his or her work
to attend to you wanting to meet the pet.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:-
 The Animal Shelter and Rescue center is designed to limited to ground floor only
over land in midst of tall trees and natural water bodies.
 The site selected is chosen far away from the industrial or urban areas.
 More provision for natural ventilation and natural lighting.
 To incorporate sustainable green building techniques to achieve carbon neutral
structure and energy saving environment.
 To provide all required medical amenities to maintain health of the animals.
 Clean, scientific and spacious food storage spaces to achieve maximum organic
nutrition.
 Moisture resistant, sound resistant, fire resistant building elements for the
maximum safety and hygiene.
