Date of submission: 21-05-2021
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this experiment is to assess students’ skill on designing and
performing demonstration of an open-ended lab.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Design an amplifier using a BJT having the following specifications:

i. Minimum input impedance: 2 kΩ

ii. Maximum output impedance: 3.5 kΩ
iii. Gain: 60
iv. Maximum power consumption: 25 mW
v. β = 150
vi. VCC = 12 V

DETAILED STEPS AND CALCULATIONS OF MY DESIGN
Step 1 : Draw small signal equivalent circuit

\
Step 2 : Write Voltage gain (Av), Output Impedance (Ro), Input Impedance (Ri) expression
Here,
𝑣𝑏𝑒 = 𝑉𝑖𝑛 ; RL = 2 kohm ;
𝐴𝑣 = - Vout/Vin = -60[V/V]
Phase difference between input and output voltage is 180 degree, hence the negative sign is
used in the voltage gain expression.

Node equation at C,
𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡
+ 𝑔𝑚 ∗ 𝑣𝑏𝑒 = 0
𝑅𝐶||𝑅𝐿
𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡
+ 𝑔𝑚 ∗ 𝑉𝑖𝑛 = 0
𝑅𝐶||𝑅𝐿
𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡
= −𝑔𝑚 ∗ 𝑅𝐶||𝑅𝐿
𝑉𝑖𝑛
60
𝑔𝑚 =
𝑅𝐶||2

Input Impedance, Rin = R1||R2||rb Output

Impedance, Rout = RC
Step 3 : Let, Rout = RC = 3.2k and calculate gm, IC, IB, IE, rb, VC, VE, RE, R2, VB, R1

gm = 60/3.2||2
gm = 60/1.23
= 48.78 mA/v

𝐼𝐶 = 𝑔𝑚 ∗ 𝑉𝑇 = 48.78 ∗ 0.026 = 1.268 𝑚𝐴

𝐼𝐶 1.268
𝐼𝐵 = = = 0.008 𝑚𝐴
B 150

𝐼𝐸 = 𝐼𝐶 + 𝐼𝐵 = 1.268 + 0.008 = 1.276𝑚𝐴

𝑉𝑇 0.026
𝑟𝑏 = = = 3.25𝑘
𝐼𝐵 0.008

Now follow the design rule,

VCE=Vcc/2=6V [Vcc=12v]

Vc=6+IcRc

= 6+1.268*3.2

Vc=10.032 v

So VE=(12-10.032)V

VE=1.968 v

RE= 𝑉𝐸/𝐼𝐸 = 1.968/1.278 =1.54k

=>R2<= (1+𝛽)𝑅𝐸/10

<= (1+150)∗1.54/10

=>R2<=23.254 kohm

R2=23.254kohm
Vbe=0.7: Vbe=VB-VE; VB=VE+Vbe:

VB=VE+0.7

VB=1.968+0.7

=1.668 v

IR2= 𝑉𝐵/𝑅2 =2.668/23.254mA

=0.113 mA

IR1= IR2+IB

=> IR1=IR2+IB=0.113+0.008mA

=0.121mA

=>R1= 𝑉𝐶𝐶−𝑉𝐵/𝐼𝑅1

=(12-2.668)/0.121

=77.123 kohm

So Rin=R1||R2||rb

Rin=77.123||23.254||3.25

=> Rin=2.75 kohm

𝐴𝑣 = −𝑔𝑚 ∗ 𝑅𝐶||𝑅𝐿 = −48.78 ∗ 3.2||2 = −48.78 ∗ 1.23

=-59.9994 [𝑉/𝑉]

𝑉𝐶 ∗ 𝐼𝐶 < 25 𝑚𝑊

VC < 25/1.268 V

VC < 19.716 V
VB = 2.56V

VC = 8.07V

VE = 1.910V

IC = 1.228mA

IB = 0.011 mA

IE = 1.240mA

gm = 𝐼𝐶/𝑉𝑇 = 1.228/0.026= 47.23 [𝑚𝐴/𝑉]

VB 1.668v 2.56v

VC 10.032v 8.07v

VE 1.96v 1.91v

IC 1.268mA 1.22mA

Comment : from the pspice simulation I can see that the

values are little differtent from calculated and
measured.

Discussion : This is an open ended lab experiment where we design an amplifier using a BJT. It
was difficult to do but in last I done it well.we need to be carefully about everything in this
experiment.
